So I'm trying to help a friend who does a lot of video editing with getting a new computer. He has an old iMac from 2008 I think. He seems pretty set on getting a Mac, which I disagree with because of just how much you could do with that same money for individual PC parts.

He wants the new iMac 5k which can be found here: http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/imac-retina
It's $2,500 for 8gb of ram and a 4th gen i5 quad core with a 5k 27-inch screen (seems a bit overkill to me), as well as a R9 M290X 2gb GPU.

On the other hand, there's the iMac without the 5k screen. Found here: http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/imac
It is also $2,500, but rather than an i5 it has a 4th gen quad core i7 with hyperthreading and a GTX 775M GPU with a 27 inch 1440p screen.

To me, with video editing in mind, it seems like a much better idea to go with the second choice because of the i7. He would probably upgrade to 16gb or 24gb of ram from the original 8gb, but not through Apple because of how overpriced they make it. Just pop two more DIMMs in there.

Thoughts, anybody? I don't know much about Macs, and I think he should let me build a PC for him, but whatever.. Please share what you think with me. Thanks!

I think it comes down to SW at this point. Does he need Final Cut Pro? Or will he be using other video editing SW?

If he HAS to go OSX, the choice between the two iMac's come down to his source/final material. If he's working with 4K/UHD video...the 5K iMac is nearly a must. If its 1080p, the 1440p iMac with better specs will be much better.

If he's not held to any particular OS or SW suite...yes, build him a great PC x99 based PC (i7 5820K) with 32GB+ memory, and a GTX 970/980. That should leave enough money for a decent 4K display. Cheers Mate
