AMD FX-9370 overheating w/ stock watercooler

Let me first apologize for not having all of the info here, I'm not at home, so I can't bring up my specs. This is a pretty general question, though.

Basically, I just upgraded to the FX-9370, which came with a CoolerMaster closed loop watercooling system. I have double-checked the fans, I think they're in there correctly, and I reapplied and re tightened the the heatsink and thermal compound (Antec Diamond 7).

When my system overheated, my game of CS:GO froze, everything froze, and I quickly shut down my system with the power switch on the PSU. When I opened it up, all of my parts were hot, and the entire inside of the case was hot. The walls of the case were warm to the touch, and the waterblock/radiator were painfully hot to the touch.

I think the temp it died at was 71c. Idle temp is closer to 20-40c.

Here is the CPU:

Because the waterblock was hot, I'm pretty sure the water is being circulated fine, and I think this is because of poor airflow. As far as I can tell, the fans on the radiator (two of them) are mounted correctly, both are facing the same way, and it is indeed working. The two fans are connected to the motherboard with an adapter that came factory with the system that allows you to put two fans in one fan slot (CPU FAN), and the waterblock/pump is attached to the 'CPU OPT' fan slot I believe.

Because everything was so hot I think its a problem with airflow in the case, but any input would be great. Again, I can get more technical info once I'm home, but this is all I can do for now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solution

Yeah update that and all the motherboard drivers, including the network card:

Hello Ahammer,

It may be because of its incompatibility with he Mobo. This beast is well suited to some specific MoBos. It is normal for this CPU to run at 70 underload.

The LC is alright. it may be due to the airflow in the case. Make sure there is proper intake and exhaust.

It should not shut down at 70o, I think its cut off is around 100o. Also hitting the power button is not as good as just closing the program putting the load on the PC as you stop all the cooling fans. If you just exit the program your fans will continue cooling and reducing the temperature quicker.

I am wondering if your vrm overheated, with this cpu I hear of people jury rigging fans to point t the vrms to keep then cool enough

Right, so everything is working with the pump (not the fans, I didnt have another adapter) hooked up to the PSU directly. Is it safe to have a 4 pin CPU power connector to a two pin fan connector? It seems to be working fine.

Fan for the radiator can still run off the CPU_Fan header, so the mobo can control the speed based on the temp, just not the pump.

Sounds like its sorted.

Plugging the fan and pump into the PSU solved the temp problem, but now I'm getting a BSOD error.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

The Memory.dmp file makes no mention of what caused this.

I'm waiting for windows to configure it's updates, this is a fresh installation. A couple of questions:

Could the overheat have damaged something, causing the BSOD

Could the windows updates fix this?

(UEFI was up to date, I still haven't updated my drivers, waiting for windows updates)

Alright, update time.

RobCrezz, updating the drivers seems to have worked.
I updated:
Realtek lan driver
Rolled back 280x driver to one I knew worked
installed 182 windows updates
Updated chipset driver

It still runs a bit hot, but the BSOD is gone now. The heat I can fix with underclocking or adding more fans. Its noisy but thats the price I pay for 4.4GHz

Thanks for all your help!
