Alarmingly high CPU temperatures despite watercooling (up to 100°C)

Hello,

I just bought a new CPU (i7 4790k) and a water-cooling unit (Alphacool Eisberg 240) and installed them myself and everything went quite well except for installing the radiators, which was a pain in the ass)
While my idle temperatures are ok-ish (around 30-40°C) my temperatures under load can spike up to 100°C, both HWMonitor and CoreTemp tell me after running Fire Strike on 3DMark that the temperatures reached a maximum of 100°C, even when playing CS:GO my temperatures can go up to 90°C.

I have reapplied the thermal paste 3 times now and I doubt it's the reason for the high temperature, unless the Thermal paste I got is that bad, I think it's this one but even if the thermal paste is that bad (which it probably is) the temperatures still shouldn't be that high right?
Airflow shouldn't be a problem either since I tested everything while my system was completely open in the middle of a room with nothing obstructing the airflow in or outside the system (the room had a temperature of around 22°C).

My System:
CPU: Intel i7-4790K
Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VII Ranger
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance (2 x 8.0 GB)
GPU: Gigabyte Windforce GTX 780 Ti OC
PSU: Corsair TX750W
Water-Cooler Alphacool Eisberg 240

Thanks

Idle temp seems ok indeed so unlikely that its a mounting issue. When you stop stressing the cpu, does the temp go back down to 30-40° straight away? If not could be an issue with flowrate/pump.

Thanks for the quick response, yeah as soon as I stop stressing it it goes right back to 30-40°C

Hmm... the Alphacool TIM wont be the best, but should be just fine. How much did u use? Using too much is really bad for temps. Best is small pea size dot in the center of the CPU and let the cooler spread it. Also make sure you have adequate mounting pressure.

On another topic did you OC the CPU and what's the core voltage when idle and while under load?

Yeah I used around a pea size and let it spread by the cooler, I'll check the mounting pressure again but I'm pretty sure I got it quite tight maybe nearly too tight.

I didn't OC anything yet but thought about doing it, but surely not with those temperatures.
The Core Voltage while idle is around 0.7 V and when playing csgo it's 1.2V

Voltages are normal. It must be the cooler. Do you have the stock cooler (or maybe even something better) laying around? Try mounting different cooler to confirm. Even the stock cooler should stay well below those temps.

Yeah got the stock cooler and my old cooler still around, will try it with the old cooler since the stock cooler has the thermal paste already applied so it should work in any case. Might take some time,

Update:
I apparently can't install my old cooler with that motherboard so I installed the stock cooler and changed the thermal paste.

After running Fire Strike on 3DMark again the max temperature I got is yet again 100°C. So can I conclude from this that the thermal paste is most likely the problem?

Yeah I'll order a good paste and will comment again once I've got it. Thanks very much for your help :)

Ok, got my new thermal paste and after applying it to the CPU and installing the water-cooler once again. My max temperature after running Fire Strike was 65°C :D.
And I generally haven't seen it go over 70°C.
So guys, never save on thermal paste, it's important.

Thank you very much for helping once again :D

ive been having the same issues but when i install the stock cooler with the water cooler paste it is exactly like the stock cooler was before so 25 idle and 70-80 under full load so it cant be the thermal paste so what could it be
