The title says it all. I know there's a small chance like 5% that it will work if i install windows somewhere else and try it on a different desktop. But what if I install for example Windows 8.1 on one partition and use it on a desktop and install Windows 7 on other partition on the same drive to use it on a laptop?

Maybe.
Try it. See what happens.

So you're going to be physically swapping the 2.5" drive back and forth?
Seems like FAR too much hassle to save $50 on a 1TB drive for the desktop.

It's not actually $50 everywhere like in US. Anyways would it work?

Nah, I might corrupt my data and it's gonna take too long to back it up to make it worth. Anyways which of those low priced hard drives do you recommend? I know there are some cheap WD caviar green 1TB drives but i don't really need 1TB, 500GB is perfect for me. Did you have any experience with samsung, hitachi or maxtor hard drives? What are they like?
