is the R9 290X 8gb overkill for a 1080p?

Well im planning on building my very first Gaming Pc :Spec:

I5-4590
8gb 1600MHZ
MSI H87-G43 Gaming
SSD 240GB Kingston SSDnow V300
AOC i2276VWM ips Monitor

and so far i've been getting bad news from Gtx 970 users(Friends) about exceeding 3.5GB vram limit, so i've planned on getting a R9 290x 4GB and then i discoverd that the 8GB Vram Version is the same price of the Gtx 970. so to cut to the chase i want to know if its worth buying a R9 290x 4/8 instead of the Gtx 970(Vram Issue) and if so, is it an over kill or just fine for this montior

btw, will there be a difference between fps for the R9 290x 4 and the 8 for a 1080p resolution for example will i get better performance for the R9 290x 4gb on a 1080p than the r9 290x 8gb. and im really sorry for the dumb questions here

its my first build and im anxious about regretting it later

No. Performance will be identical: While it is possible for an application to take advantage of the extra VRAM, there are not any games that actually do so. Benchmarks of the 8GB version of the 290x are identical to the 4GB version even at 4k.

If you can get a 290x for less than the 970, then it could be a good buy, but don't expect it to give significantly better performance.

so you're saying and please correct me if i misunderstood that even having an 8gb Vram i still get the same performance as the 4gb. but what about GTA V, dont you think having extra Vram could benefit me with Ultra settings plus does resolution (1080p) really decrease the preformance of the r9 290x 8gb

The 8gb version of the cards is made for crossfiring two of them at high resolution such as 3 monitors or 2160p.

At 1080p there is no need to get more than 1 290x 4gb

You don't even need 4gb for GTA V at max settings at 1440p. The 8GB will have no performance benefit. Take a look. It's been tested:

Spoiler: the 970 has better performance for GTA at both 1080p and 4k than the 8GB 290x.

it's a 60 hz 1080p monitor, it doesn't matter which you get because both the 290x and 970 will max out everything. Get whichever card is cheaper.

Personally, i have a slight preference for the 970 over a 290x because I appreciate the lower power/heat and I find nvidia's control panel better. Really, both are great cards, though. if you find one you like that fits your budget, get it.
