I'm pretty much only going to be using this machine for gaming. I want a pretty decent level of future proofing, and I can overclock either CPU as I'm buying a watercooler. All opinions appreciated :)

When it comes to single core performance, the 4790k wins, but the AMD 8350 has more cores, can overclock to higher speeds and it's cheaper. The AMD will run most games better than the Intel, but in some of the older games where the amount of cores the CPU has, the Intel will run better. Personally I would recommend the AMD.

Have to disagree. Higher speeds does not mean it is faster. Have to take into account of performance per clock. At the same frequency the i5 is much faster.
The i5 eats the fx 8350 for dinner. Games currently do not use more than 4 threads. This is also why the i7 and the i5 have virtually the same performance.

Benchmarks from GTA V, considered a good cpu scaling game.

Thanks for those benchmarks, they were really useful. I think I'm leaning more towards the intel to be honest. I'll easily be able to bump it up to 4ghz and I feel like for gaming only, the intel has the edge. How do you feel about intel's performance in the future when gaming is optimised for more cores?

The way the FX architecture is, it's not quite a true 8 core. Each core is built of 2 modules that share resources. 2 integer cores and only 1 floating point core if I remember my reading right.

So even if a game was optimized for more than 4 cores, the intel would probably still win. In that case the i7 might actually make sense because of hyper threading.

Currently and for the foreseeable future games will just get better and better at using 4 threads. Some will argue they will use more, but it is really hard to code to use multiple threads. Even in current games, you see one or two cores stressed way more than the others. It's taken 8+ years of quad cores being prevalent for us to get the first game titles that require a quad core (Min requirements) So don't be worried about games coming out soon that REQUIRE more than a quad core. A company will not do that until the lions share of users have more than a quad core, which they don't.

In my humble opinion when it comes down t this case, it comes down to: Are you and AMD fanboy or an Intel Fanboy. Personally i use the i5 4690k and it runs everyhting fine (Paired with a gtx 960). So yeah

Haha thats the exact card I'm going for. Thanks, I've decided on intel now.

I am a huge amd fan. Data does not lie though. I go with the empirical data. Intel wins.
