AMD R9 280X or Nvidia GTX 770 for my build?

Hi everyone,

I've almost settled on a build, but as always the choice of graphics card remains the toughest.

I aim to play at 1080p with a good fps. Fps and future proofing matter the most to me.

I've already seen that the 770 has about a 5-10fps advantage in many games (except those optimized for AMD). However, a second hand 770 is 170£ here, which is the same as a new MSI 280X on Amazon. I'm also wondering if the 3GB and 384-bit memory bus provides extra future proofing on the 280X or if that won't really matter by that time.

It would also be great if you could have a look at my build specs to see if I'm bottlenecking somewhere. My aim is to stay around the 450£ mark which is tough since I'm already at 469£. I want to avoid going past 500£ :/

AMD FX6300 Black Edition 76£
HyperX FURY Series 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR3 1866MHz CL10 50£
Gigabyte SKT-AM3 78LMT-USB3 Motherboard 40£
WD 1TB 3.5 inch Internal Hard Drive - Caviar Blue 43£
Corsair Builder Series CXM 600W Modular 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX/EPS PSU 58£
MSI 280X or GTX 770 (unspecified version) 170£
Case 27£
Kingston 120GB SSD for the OS (already purchased)
Copy of Windows 8.1 (already purchased)
Monitor, keyboard, mouse (already purchased)

I'm won't be making this build any time soon though, just planning ahead. I will probably buy all the parts around September/October. By that time hopefully some parts will be cheaper and I could spend the extra cash on a better graphics card.

I would go with the 280x at ths point because of he extra vram and wider bus, the 770 and 280x trade blows depending in the game http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1041?vs=1037 ,but the 280x is more future proof because of the vram, and games are starting to use a lot more of it.

As far as your build I would suggest a 970 mobo for better oc'ing of the 6300, and if you don't plan on oc'ing I would definitely look into a i3 build.

If you are waiting till September I think the price of the gpu's might have gone down with the release of the 300 series, and you might have more options in your price range at that time.

Better cpu and a very good quality psu.

By september the AMd 300 series should be well in place. Consider buying from that line up because newer tech is always good.

Thanks, any particular 970 mobo you'd recommend? They seem to range from 60£ and up.

I chose not to go with the i3 because the ones in my price range are dual-cores. However, I guess single-threaded performance is much better on the i3 than the FX6300. Will this be a significant advantage in games? If yes, any dual-core i3 you'd recommend?

Wow, that is a really nice build for not much more money. Amazed how you got a more expensive core i5 and 750W PSU in there. Since the 300 series will probably be more expensive than the 280X, what should I cut down on from your build to stay in the 500£ range? Maybe a cheaper CPU?

Thank you guys so much, I will definitely look into these parts. I'm moving away from an Acer Aspire V3 laptop with a GTX 760M and a Core i7. I bought it because I wanted a portable gaming machine (I travel quite a bit). At the time I was a noob and didn't understand the difference between the 760 and the 760M. I'll have to sacrifice portability, but I get such a better price and performance that it's worth it. I also look forward to building my own PC, something I've been wanting to do for a while.
