Ping Spikes/Internet slowing down when gaming

When I play Counter-Strike, I sometimes suffer random ping spikes, which can make my ping spike to 300+. When this happens, and I go to speedtest, my speed has reduced from 70mbps to below 10. It happens on occasion even when I don't play games, but majority of the time it happens when I am. I'm with Optus (Australia) and have good internet + PC (wired connection).

Any troubleshooting tips would be appreciated, as It is really frustrating.

I called Optus and they ran some tests, and decided that replacing the modem and router might fix it (as they are both old), they said if that doesn't fix it then they don't know what's causing it. I played some Counter-Strike for about an hour and already my ping was spiking, my speed on speedtest.net dropped from 96mbps to 12mbps. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

I only play Counter-Strike Source and Counter-Strike Global Offensive, and it happens on both. I don't think it's Counter-Strike specifically, just my router or something not agreeing with it playing games and panicking... idk..

For anyone reading this and has an idea, I made a more detailed post here: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2633983/counter-strike-causing-internet-slow.html

Cheers.

All of that was on the very first page of a Google search. These problems date back a full 10 years. Yes, 2005.

Now I want you to reconsider your statement that this is not CS related.

Counter-Strike is one of the most popular fps games on the pc, so its expected that there will be a lot of people with ping issues. If you read the new post i made, it states that playing it slows my entire Internet down even though it is extremely capable of handling it, as i have been for the past 7 years. Copy and pasting generic searches that dont relate to my issue wont force me to reconsider my statement. I searched for a long time before deciding to go and make my own post, simply because i cant find anyone else with an issue like this.

Those posts, prove this is an ongoing CS:S problem.

I play one of the most popular games out there, and you cannot find full pages of the same problems that CS has. And the game I play has roughly 8 million players right now.

In any case, if you do a Google search, you too will find pages that claim to know how to fix the issues. I do not have CS, and have never had it, so I cannot confirm if they work or not. I suggest you go watch some of those YouTube videos on how to fix that issue, and then decide for yourself if that might work for you.

As I said, I have done my research, just because their issues sound similar to mine, does not mean it is the issue I am having. My issue is extremely unique, as it's not just the ping that is affected, it is the internet for the entire household, even after I close the game it remains slow for several hours. High ping is a side-effect of this, but the fact that playing a PC game (which I have been doing for so long) is now causing my internet to screw up, is concerning.

This fixed it for me immediately. The problem is the nature of wifi adapters.
The solution. It involves using the Registry Editor. Be careful not to change anything else except for the things that are listed.

1. Open Registry Editor (Windows 8/8.1, right click where Start button was, click Run, type regedit. Windows 7, click Start, click Run, type regedit)

2. Head to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System\ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Class \ {4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} [Be sure to expand the 4d36e.... folder]

3. Inside will be a number of folders named 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Look through all these folders until you get one that says Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 in the registry.

4. Once the device has been found, search for a value called ScanWhenAssociated.

5. If you see this value, set it to 0 on hexadecimal. If you don't see the value, click edit from the top, select new, and click DWORD (32-bit) value. Rename this value to ScanWhenAssociated (exactly as shown). Make sure this value is set to 0 on hexadecimal.

6. Restart the computer. This is important. The changes won't take effect unless you do.

You can test by cmd running ping 192.168.0.1 -t (or whatever your router gateway is) and you will see that the ping spikes have gone.
