My friend is looking for an upgrade from his dual gtx 660s in his alienware pc he bought (yes I know I told him he shouldn't have bought one) I don't know all of his specs but I kept on trying to think of a good upgrade for him but I couldn't think of one. Do you guys know any good upgrades for him? He's not looking to go over 275$

On that budget, you could get a 7970/280X or 960. The 280X isn't any faster than the pair of 660's and the 960 is slower.

For $300, you could get a 970, which would be a bit faster than his current setup.

What I've done for quite some time is buy 1 generation old used cards from Asus/Gigabyte/EVGA. Those companies have three year fullly transferable warranties by manufacture date.

You could get a used 780 Ti within that budget, which would be a significant upgrade.

Another option is simply to tough it out. If DirectX 12 lives up to even half it's hype, it's going to make multi-GPU configurations awesome.

cheers!

not even a GTX 980 is worth it, 2x GTX 660 are almost as fast as a GTX 690, and a GTX 690 is on par (slightly faster in some titles) than a GTX 980:

2x GTX 660 close to a GTX 690:

If he wants a noticeable boost he'd have to aim for a Titan Z or a r9 295x2, best would be to keep his current gpus, maybe upgrade his CPU depending which one he has.

That initial sentence is just ludicrous. Were you looking at the 3-card 660 TI SLI and thinking it was 2 regular 660's?

The 670 2-way SLI was close to the 690 (which is essentially a pair of slightly underclocked 680's)

660 sli doesnt look close to 690 to me...

Getting back on topic, you have 3 options for a significant performance increase as I see it.

1. bump your budget up to $300 and buy a 970 (and overclock it as jjb did).

2. Buy a used 780 TI from Asus/Gigabyte/EVGA (the 780 TI GPU is ~10% faster than the 970). There will be 1-2 years left on the warranty.

3. Wait for DirectX 12, which will give a significant performance boost to your current setup.

Cheers!

My personal upgrade plan is to wait til DX12 and the 390X come out.

I'll see how my performance is under DX12 and if it's not as much as I would like, the 390X debut will have driven down card prices across the board. I'll probably pick up a pair of 780's or 780 TI's at that point (currently running SLI 670).
