Well, I am beginning to think something happened to the motherboard between the time you first tested it, and when it later did not work.
The shut down after running for 5 seconds or so, leads me to believe that it is one of 3 things:
1) Damaged motherboard
2) CPU or GPU over heating
3) Bad power or damaged connector on the motherboard (4 pin connector broken?)
Its going to be almost impossible for us to diagnose this any further. That 4 pin connector on the motherboard provides power to the PCI slots.
If you have a card in one of the slots when the 4 pin is not attached, it may not be firmly seated in its slot, or it might now be damaged. When you plug in the 4 pin connector, all at once it has power and does something at is causing the system to power down.
Or maybe there is a loose screw shorting something out.
Double check all of your power cables, even the big 24 pin one to the motherboard. Make sure they are firmly inserted into their connectors.
One more crazy thought came to mind... You said you mounted this system on a piece of wood. If the wood is still not dry inside, it could be acting as a conductor. Creating a short. Try removing it from the wood, putting it on a piece of cardboard, or a newspaper, something that will not conduct electricity, and then see if it will work.
