Hi, within the next few weeks I will be buying parts and building a small office server, its main purpose is a file server for a few computers, as well as a server where office security cameras record to. it wont be used as a client pc so the monitor will be off most of the time (note I wont have to purchase a monitor, keyboard or mouse (just purchasing the computer components))

My budget is around $1000 not including operating system and I will be buying my parts in Australia.

I do prefer Intel parts over AMD, and Gigabyte and Asus or Intel motherboards as opposed to others like a-bit, msi or as-rock

I definitely wont be overclocking the server. :p

thanks.

bad mix

Xeon, yes.
that mobo and ram? where's the ECC? there isn't any.

this is a SERVER. xeon / i3 and ECC are your first "must have" items. none of this Z97 chipset crap. C222 / C224 / C226. RAID1 for your two OS drives (SSD is nice here). RAID10 for your data storage drives (plain Seagate desktop drives are great). hot swap bays for both OS and data drives.

my last office server build:

i3-4360 (though you could grab a G as well for cheaper or go up to a Xeon E3-1235 / 1236, I'd skip the 1225/1226 since they're just 4-core without HT, so at that point the i3 is more sensible)
ASRockRack C226 WS
2x8G Crucial 1333 ECC
dual 840 Evo for OS in Raid1
quad ST1000DM000 (or 001) for data in Raid10
icydock hot swap for SSDs
rosewill hot swap for HDDs
Antec true power trio 650 (old one, but solid and not being stressed at all)
Cooler Master Elite 370 case
Win 2012R2 Standard

feel free to use that as a sample. I bought most of it from newegg so you can go see what it's like and find similar locally.

I don't record cameras to that server directly (I have a separate DVR for that) but I suppose you could if you have the right card and use larger drives (or a second set of Raid1 or Raid10 drives dedicated for the recording)

Probably not since he didn't include ECC RAM and you probably don't need it anyway. This file server won't be doing anything very critical or taxing. You could build it just like a PC. I would opt in for the mirrored RAID array if I was you or even a RAID 5 array if you can get 3 or more drives. You want a reliable power supply and shouldn't need more than 8GB of RAM if all it is doing is File Share and Sec-Cam recording
