I have a Core i7-3770. Without Intel Speed Boost, it runs at stock max 3.4 ghz. Cpu Temps when the load is max runs in the 60's low 70's (C). Now when I have Intel Speed Boost it runs at 4.1 ghz consistently and at 70's to mid 80's (C) when at max load. My tjmax is 105 C. Is mid 80's too high?

Solution
If you're running the CPU on the stock cooler, the temps are quite fine. The stock coolers are good only upto stock speeds (Turbo boost, 3.9GHz). Mid 80s is not alarmingly high, it won't damage the CPU but the temps can indeed go lower for good with an aftermarket cooler.

I have a msi p67a-gd55. Any idea why Intel Speed Boost cranks it up to 4.1 ghz and how to change that to 3.9 ghz?

You're referring to your motherboard, which has little role to play in determining CPU temps. Are you using the stock Intel cooler which came with the CPU?

The Intel Extreme Tuning utility can help you with this, you can normally crank up the non-K CPU by a couple 100Mhz while on Turbo boost. And accordingly you can crank it down as well.

Found out it was just a bug. I turned Intel Turbo Boost off and then back on and now the Mhz goes up and down depending on usage and goes to max 3.9 ghz. Using stock cooler and using Real Temp while running the Intel CPU stress test was getting max 83 C. It just feels safer to run at 3.9 ghz than 4.1 ghz.
