GTX 970 VRAM issue is better than system ram?

LinusTechTips said accessing the .5 is still faster than accessing system ram. So if the 970 was only 3.5, would there still be stuttering when going over the 3.5 and accessing system ram? Or is the stuttering because of the .5's memory "architecture"?

Solution
You're likely to get a mixed bag of results. Some people have complained about the 3.5+0.5 VRAM on a 970 GTX. Not everyone has experienced an issue though. So if you hit the 3.6 usage, you are accessing the slower RAM module on the 970 GTX.

The people who have experienced shuttering with the 970, many of them were playing on 1440. The only game I can think of at the moment where people have experienced and issue at 1080 was Dying Light.

i've no evidence for this, but the tiering of the memory speeds would seem to suggest this is how is would work.

the only problem is that the driver might recognise the difference between system and vram, and load certain textures into system that are rarely used etc. it may not recognise the difference between the 3.5 and the 0.5 and hence you could have a commonly used texture in the 0.5 through bad luck.
