How many cores do I really have?

I check task manager and other programs and it says I only have 2 cores. I bought the pc saying it had 4 cores, and the program speccy says I have 4 cores. How do I make it so all my games and programs know I have 4 cores instead of just speccy?

Way to go,,, that will confuse the poor OP even more!!!
General - and most commonly accepted...
Most people have 1 CPU (e.g. I have 1.. an Intel i7 920)
That CPU can have a number of physical cores. (mine has 4)
Through hyper threading - each physical core can look like it is 2 cores.
So if I look in task manager - it looks like I have 8 cores

If you post your CPU model.. we can tell (or you can google) this info.

Thanks man, all the websites are telling me it is quad core but in task manager it says it has 2 cores but 4 threads.
