At title says, my PWM fan is not detected by the asus a88x-plus mobo, desptie the spec documents showing it is a pwm enabled fan.

Fan connectors can become loose rather easy, I'll suggest checking the 4 pin connector to make sure none of the wires are loose. If you find that none of the wires are loose, I'll suggest contacting Arctic about RMA for the fan - I am assuming the fan does come on and you are not getting a CPU fan failure notice

i get a cpu fan error every time i boot, however the fan spins up and appars to change speed with load. however i have notice that the system is running much too hot for my tastes and downloaded a copy of speedfan to try to alleviate it, and found this out.

Ensure the fan is plugged into the header labeled CPU_FAN (the one on the right of the two fan headers there) and not the one to the left of it labeled CHA_FAN2. If it is in the proper header and you have another PWM fan available, try the other PWM fan in that header (put the CPU fan into the CHA_FAN2 header for this test) to ensure the fan is the problem.

Yeah, as Friedman said, double-check and make sure that you have the fan plugged (properly) into the correct header.

If you do, try another fan connection on that header. If the motherboard beeps as well, then there is something wrong with that fan header.

If there was something wrong with the fan, specifically the PWM circuitry, it would either not operate, or operate at full load all the time.
