Advice on overclocking voltage? (4690k @ 4.2GHz, Hyper 212 EVO)

I just installed my new cooler and decided to overclock for the first time, I've set it at 4.2 GHz with a manual vcore voltage of 1.2v, is this too high and should I try to reduce it from here?

Using AIDA64 for stress testing I maxed out at 60 C with 100% usage (no throttling) but generally stayed around 55 C. According to HWMonitor I'm idling at 35 C.

Also, should I change from manual voltage to adaptive? I have no idea how to use adaptive or where to set the +/- offset.

I say you should see just how far you can overclock on 1.2V

Once you get your max overclock at 1.2V you can switch over to adaptive voltage. Just know that some stress tests will request more voltage when using AVX instruction sets with adaptive voltage. (AIDA64 does this when "Stress FPU" is checked.)

No offset is needed as long as the voltage is stable under load at what you set it in the BIOS.

I just pushed it up to 4.4 GHz and stress tested it for 10 minutes, honestly it still seems pretty stable with similar results to before, the temperatures are basically unchanged apart from a 1 C / 2 C gain. I don't really feel comfortable going higher than this though, I'll switch to adaptive without offset and see how it goes.

Ah I had no idea, like I said this is my first time overclocking. I'll continue stress testing it in that case and see how it goes.

Alright I ran stress tests for almost 7 hours and everything seemed good, so I've switched to adaptive. The only strange thing is that the maximum voltage is at 1.203 instead of the 1.2 that I set, but I'd assume this can't be much of an issue unless I stress tested on adaptive.

Will it be okay to leave it on adaptive to do its own thing now? Or is there a potential that the CPU won't take as much voltage or will take too much voltage in comparison to what it needs? I noticed when in low usage mode (down to 800 MHz) it only uses around 0.715v.

Yes that is fine. A difference of 0.003 volts is very good actually.

It will adjust to what the processor asks for. Should be fine to leave it on adaptive now =)

Enjoy the faster frequency, and power savings at idle/low loads.
