Hello everyone, it is my first post here but I have been coming here for help for about half a year.

I am planning on switching from an AMD CPU to an Intel. I was wondering if I needed to reinstall everything. I have most of my programs (Steam Games and others, Photoshop, etc.) on a second hard drive along with my personal files. I have my OS installed on a SSD. From what I have read, it is recommended to reinstall the OS when switching CPU manufactures, to avoid conflicting drivers. I am fine with doing that, but I was wondering if I it was also recommended to also reinstall the programs on the secondary drive as well. I would rather not have to download 400GB of programs. My specs are listed below.

I hope I have been clear enough with this question, and I am looking forward to working with you all.

Specs:
Current CPU: AMD FX 8350 @4.72Ghz
CPU Cooler: Corsair H80i with 2x Noctua NF-F12 PWM
Current Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
RAM: Kingston HyperX FURY 16GB (2x8GB) 1866MHz DDR3
PSU: Corsair CX750
Video Card: MSI GTX 970 4GB Gaming 4G
Blu-Ray Player: LG WH14NS40
SSD: Kingston Hyper X 240GB
HDD: 2x WD Blue 1TB SATA 6GB/s 7200rpm
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912
Case Fans: Cooler Master Megaflow 200 (Intake); Noctua NF-A14 (Intake); Noctua NF-S12A (Outtake)
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro
External Peripherals: Logitech G27 Wheel; Microsoft Xbox One Controller; Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller; Logitech K270 & M185

Upgrade Specs:
CPU: Intel i7-4790K @4.0Ghz (I will possibly overclock or use the TurboBoost)
Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth Z97 Mark2
Everything else is the same.

Yes....applications on the other HDD. Some may work just fine. Others WILL need to be reinstalled. Personally, I just reinstall everything, just to preclude any weirdness that might crop up later.
Due to the extreme differences in chipset drivers and core hardware involved, it's highly recommended to reinstall when changing from one platform to another as in AMD to Intel. In some cases you can get away with it but most of the time the system won't even boot without errors. I'd reinstall even if it did boot, just to guarantee a clean and efficient OS.

darkbreeze,

Are you saying I should reinstall everything on all my drives? Or just the OS and small programs on the SSD? For example, could I leave my HDDs (with my programs and files) unplugged while installing the OS to the SSD, and then plug them in afterwards?

Your files that live on the other drive will be fine.
Any applications on that will need to be reinstalled.

EDIT: Your Steam games should also be fine living on that other drive.

USAFRet,

Thank you for the help. When you say "on that", what are you referring to? Do you mean programs on the HDDs? (Such as iTunes, Photoshop, VMWare, to name a few) I just want to be sure that I get things working without much struggle.

Thank you both for your help. It won't be too hard to do that.
