I just got a headset today, and I've plugged it into a set of those black and red jacks. When I play music I can hear it all fine. But if I try to use the mic/set up the mic with the laptop in the first place - it doesnt recognise that there is any device plugged in. Any ideas?

It's not even showing that the headset is plugged in, so I can't select it

My laptop is a Acer ES1-411-C2TL 14" Celeron 500GB Notebook. I may not have been clear with the jacks. My headset goes into two cords, one for mic one for audio, my laptop only has the one port and has a picture of headphones with a mic. But the headset came with the adapter so I can plug the mic and audio leads into the it and then it ends in just the one plug that can go into the laptop.

I do see the built in mic - i've made sure it shows all disabled and disconnected mics so it's definitely not there.

Try to pull the adapter out of the socket carefully. It's sometimes only half a millimeter to get contact on all of the four "rings" of the plug. But that is my last idea.

Unfortunately this hasn't worked either. I really appreciate all your help though, thankyou :)
