laptop drive locking up PC

My laptop stopped booting and acted like there was no hard drive at all. I took the hard drive out and plugged it into my PC (it is a SATA drive) and it sees one of the two drives (it was a partitioned drive) right away and I was able to copy over all the data. The other drive sometimes comes up (always much later) but either with "you must format" or it looks normal. Problem is when I move around that drive much, it locks up my PC. I tried doing a CHKDSK but that locked up my computer as well (tried both the "tools" scan and the command prompt from the Start bar). When ever I boot with the drive plugged in, it won't complete the boot, so I can't boot to a command prompt then scan (as I don't think I can plug it in after it has booted since I am just at the bare bones command prompt).
Nothing critical on the drives (all important stuff is double backed up) but I would like to grab a few things if I could. Any ideas?

It may be dead then. As a last resort, I think I would still try to add it to a desktop system, and see if it can see it as a secondary drive. That way it wont need to boot from it, and it might see the partitions. But if it cannot even see the drive, its pretty much game over, and time to break out the bugle.

When I plug it into the PC it sees one partition fairly quickly and it runs. When the second partition shows up (minutes later) the computer freezes soon after.
