Hello. I know that there are probably lot of other threads where i should write, but anyway i want to ask about something wierd going on with my laptop. So. I have like 4 years old Lenovo laptop and it started to make a clapping noise every 5 seconds repeatedly. I recorded the sound because i really want to know what is happening. First i thought that its problem with a fan but now im suspecting its a HDD problem. Also a few days earlier when i turned the laptop upside down the "fan" (or HDD i dont know) started to do really lound and intense grinding noise until i restarted the pc.

That clapping sound : http://www.mediafire.com/listen/cwg9vmttggp1q2f/Clapping_noise.wav

EDIT: Also i just noticed that my pc performance had decreased a lot. When trying to play a game my performance dropped about 2 times. (From 50 fps to about 20) ... So yeah. Dont know what to do. Also i made a pc backup. (Just in case)

Sounds like a fan to me. Have you cleared dust out at all? Blow into the vents or even better open it up and remove the dust that way.

Temperature increases could cause the components to throttle themselves.

Hi there DUDSS,

It sound like a fan to me as well. :) On the other hand, HDDs going bad could cause grinding noises. It is good that you made a backup.
My advise would be to test your HDD with a brand specific(or a third party one) HDD testing tool. If the results show that the HDD should be fine, then I guess it is the fan that is making this noise.
Regarding the performance decrease, I would say that it can be caused by both HDD going bad as well as increased temps. So, in case the HDD is in a healthy condition, you should clean the dust out as Mattios already suggested.

Cheers,

So. I opened my pc and cleaned the fan (and everything else overall) and i found a small piece of plastic in the fan which was blocking the rotation. And when i booted my pc again . Bam! The clapping stopped and i could hear the fan actually spinning. Problem solved! Thank you very much for the advice :)
