Hi,

This is my first post on here so I will try my best to explain this issue.

Basic PC Specs:

CPU: Intel i5 Haswell 4670 3.4GHz Socket 1150 6MB 4th Gen. (Auto OC to 3.8GHz)
MB: Gigabyte Technology H87-HD3
Bios Version: F9 (Latest)
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 120GB (Latest FW)
HDD: 4 x Other HDD (Games, Videos & SW ect.)
RAM: 16GB DDR3 (2 x 4GB Kingston 2 x 4GB Corsair)
GPU: AMD R7 Radeon 260X MSI Afterburner: Core Clock: 1250MHz Memory Clock: 1700MHz (Latest AMD Catalyst Driver: 14.12)
PSU:Corsair Builder Series CX 600 Watt ATX/EPS 80 PLUS Bronze Power Supply Unit
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

I've noticed my OS takes a little to long to boot up than it should and I'm wondering why.

I have a new Samsung SSD 850 Evo, Connected to my MB Sata III ports using a cable capable of 6Gbps... So all that seems fine to me.

I'm in AHCI mode, all my drivers and bios are up to date.

When I look at Gigabyte Ezsetup, Ez rapid start It suggests its an SSD drive but below states warning SSD drive not detected... Its the only SSD drive connected atm so I cant see there being any conflicts or why it would say this.

I've downloaded Samsungs Magicians software to check out what that says and to test the drive.

First off it states AHCI Mode is Activated, Sata Interface is Sata 6Gb/s(Sata 3) Connected & OS optimization Maximum Performance...

When I run the performance benchmark for it, the results are a lot lower than they should be, with the message below to check that your system is configured properly by consulting the "OS Optimization" and to run "Performance optimization"...

So it's a bit of a loop because i do all that and I'm in the same situation when retrying the benchmarking....

So i have checked with some other software I have for all my drives, Hard Drive Inspector which states your disk is working in unknown, while its optimal mode is PIO mode 2 (8.3MB/s) this may be the cause of reduced disk performance...

It states
1) Try to check hard drive in bios and install the latest driver for your disk controller
2) Try to use the appropriate connection cable

As far as i'm concerned all drivers are installed and up to date, I have looked on the gigabyte website and updated all my drivers using the app center and double checked manually for anything it may not have installed. I have also used driver pack solution to scan my system and update all drivers...

in the bios the disk priority is 1 running in AHCI Mode, Now I'm not sure if there is another setting here i'm overlooking? and I am using a Sata 3 cable...

This has been really annoying me I have had another SSD on my PC which has had a similar issue stating it was running at Sata 2 speed instead of 3, so this is what leads me to believe the issue is with the mb, its controllers or something possibly in the bios... I have tried switching different cables to and for the sake of it using a different port on the mb...

So I'm wondering if someone knows what I can do to fix this issue so my drive will be working at the speeds it should?

Or maybe someone has had a similar issue with SSDs under-performing on this mb and know some setting i could change to fix it?

Any help or advice would be great because it's driving me mad.

images are below if they can help:

Thanks,

Any underperforming is probably caused by using the wrong hardware, namely multiple brands of mismatched memory. XMP (eXtreme memory profiles) simplifies setting DRAM Timings, voltages, and memory clocks. Enabling XMP is for a single kit.

Tell me what kind of memory settings you make with the combination you have or do you just fill the slots.

Hi thanks for your reply.

Yes I have tried loading optimized defaults and removing and re installing drivers for the controller, but still had the same issue.
I haven't messed around too much with any of the timings of the ram.
In the bios you can choose options for it to be automatically adjusted for performance, reliability or left as standard...

I have changed between these to see if there was any difference but there wasn't.

However I have noticed the drive for some reason is working in PATA mode and when Googling this I have found people complaining about it but usually from XP and older OS's.

I have been unable to find a solution / hotfix for this issue on windows 7 but have for other older OS's.

Any further help or advice would be appreciated.

Hi Thanks for your opinion Calvin.

SPD ext. XMP 1.3 is across all of my memory modules not just one kit as you are implying.

I appricate your comment, really I don't think here is where the problem is as when in use I have no performace issues... I can run games just fine off of other drives with no problem and load up VM's just fine no crashes or issues as you would expect with bad RAM.

I didn't buy the RAM together logically for what works best just to add more as I seen some on offer and knew It would increase performance, even if it did lower me down to the slowest of the RAMs speed. I didn't mind.

The problem appears to me to be the mode of which the SSD is set in as stated above PATA Mode and I can not get it out of it. I have uninstalled the controller and restarted then allowed Windows to reinstall it and restart again. The same problem happens I'm back in Pata Mode.

But iff what you are suggesting is correct that it be my RAM causing the issue, 8GB would run reasonably well, I can remove a pair reboot and my problem shouldn't be there anymore...

I will do that some time in the afternoon and update.

Nope I installed it just a couple of days ago after I was getting smart errors from a previous SSD.
I done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and added all my programs and drivers and what not.
The drive currently has 11.8GB partitioned off to help improve performance and lifespan of the SSD with an additional 38.4GB free...

I didn't check at first what speeds I was getting which looking back I should have when just the OS was on SSD alone.

I consentrated on getting all my drivers and software installed and during that time reboots where quite fast and I assumed everything was fine.

After a few boots with pretty much all my drivers and common apps installed I noticed the system was taking to long to boot It would show the starting windows logo quick as though it was going to load fast then breifly show welcome to windows then hang for about 30 seconds or so on a black screen the explorer would appear and eveything would be ok.

The kind of speed would be ok if say I didn't have an SSD or the system was old and due a clean install.

So thats what led me to check out the new drive and I noticed it is underperfoming and only just recently realised it is running in PATA mode...

And also I might add I'm aware of different software causing different amounts of boot time lag if they're added to start up.

I have checked this and nothing is that heavy it should impact and slow down the drive to the effect it is.

Infact I've had a hybrid drive on the same rig with Windows 8/8.1 on it with all the same software on working fine.

The problem here is with it being in PATA mode which needs to be addressed I'm sure but don't know how to go about it?

I will check this again and get back to you I have fiddled with it that much from defaults to every other configuration to see if it makes a difference, but nothing seems to have any effect.

My concern is I have read that drives can get stuck in PIO mode and people seem to have problems getting it out of it.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/817472

Mircosoft name a similar issue but there is no such fix for Windwows 7 I can find the most I have been able to find is uninstall the controller from device manager, restart and let the controllers be automatically reinstalled. Then you will be asked to restart again and the drive should be out of PIO mode/PATA...

I will try changing what you said in the bios and update.

Try reinstalling windows with only the SSD installed. then once you have your comp up and running right, install any other drives. Keep the SSD in the same sata port of the windows install. Switching the ports will mess up the boot logic.

EDIT:
First do a secure wipe of the SSD.

Hi,

Thanks for all your help and advice.I have managed now to fix the issue.

I have labeled a folder fix under my previous images here:

http://

Late last night I was looking over startup items with some software I use called Advanced System Care and noticed a few options I could tick under Deep Optimization.
The couple I think had most effect here was Optimise SSD and Intelligent Disk Accelerate.

After Optimising these I moved over to services and noticed Superfetch wasn't enabled even though the Samsung Magician stated it was I enabled this.
I also looked at a setting under the samsung magician called Rapid Mode and disabled it which then I had to restart my pc.

Then I booted up much quicker and run the Samsung Magician performance benchmark and everything seemed normal and the drive was running how it should.

I done a few tweaks with different software and settings to increase the speeds that was showing via Samsung Magican and now all is well.

Thanks again for all the advice.

I would also like to mention I had contacted samsung which got back to me today stating from the screenshots I had shown them which where the previous ones I had posted here, They said that from what they could see the drive was working how it should...

So they where no use what so ever. But for anyone else having any problems with the drive or any SSD on this motherboard or perhaps another Gigabyte MB, then I'd advise following steps throughout this whole post to see where the issue lies, as really it could be a whole host of things and I'm not 100% sure what exactly fixed it for me just it was one of the few things under Advanced System Care - Startup Manager- Deep Optimiszation & Enabling Superfetch under services which fixed the issue.
