I have a Windows XP volume from another computer that I HAVE to keep because it contains a billing program that cannot be reinstalled either on XP or on Win7. It is a SATA drive.
I first tried using Virtual PC and VirtualBox in Windows 7 on my main office computer and both crapped out. I gave up.
I next decided to install it on an old Dell Dimension 2400 using a KVM switch to switch back and forth between my main computer and the billing computer on a second computer screen. This computer has IDE only so I had to buy a bootable SATA add-on card (Sil 3114 chip).
Windows XP and Windows 7 both see the SATA card when I boot up using an IDE drive and it works. However, when I try to boot from the SATA volume I get the Windows splash screen and it loads several drivers before it gives me the BSOD.
Questions/Proposed Solutions:
1. I think I can get it to work if I can get the drivers for the SATA card loaded to the SATA drive. If I boot up Windows XP with the IDE drive as the C: drive and the SATA drive as the D: drive, is there a way to point the drivers to install to the D: drive?
2. Just thinking out loud, but there is a lot of crap on that drive (yirus protection, printers, sound, video, etc.) that installs itself when XP boots up. Maybe I need to get rid of that crap first before I try to boot up on the other computer with the SATA card?
3. Maybe I should just clone the SATA drive to the IDE drive and just skip all this crap? It's a slow computer and I thought the SATA drive would speed it up. I heard cloning from SATA to IDE is a pain, though.
4. I could build an el-cheapo computer with about $150 in parts from MicroCenter and just junk the Dell. I don't need the extra horsepower though and I had planned to use this computer in my work room with a scanner.
