Installing drivers to second HDD?

I have a Windows XP volume from another computer that I HAVE to keep because it contains a billing program that cannot be reinstalled either on XP or on Win7. It is a SATA drive.

I first tried using Virtual PC and VirtualBox in Windows 7 on my main office computer and both crapped out. I gave up.

I next decided to install it on an old Dell Dimension 2400 using a KVM switch to switch back and forth between my main computer and the billing computer on a second computer screen. This computer has IDE only so I had to buy a bootable SATA add-on card (Sil 3114 chip).

Windows XP and Windows 7 both see the SATA card when I boot up using an IDE drive and it works. However, when I try to boot from the SATA volume I get the Windows splash screen and it loads several drivers before it gives me the BSOD.

Questions/Proposed Solutions:

1. I think I can get it to work if I can get the drivers for the SATA card loaded to the SATA drive. If I boot up Windows XP with the IDE drive as the C: drive and the SATA drive as the D: drive, is there a way to point the drivers to install to the D: drive?

2. Just thinking out loud, but there is a lot of crap on that drive (yirus protection, printers, sound, video, etc.) that installs itself when XP boots up. Maybe I need to get rid of that crap first before I try to boot up on the other computer with the SATA card?

3. Maybe I should just clone the SATA drive to the IDE drive and just skip all this crap? It's a slow computer and I thought the SATA drive would speed it up. I heard cloning from SATA to IDE is a pain, though.

4. I could build an el-cheapo computer with about $150 in parts from MicroCenter and just junk the Dell. I don't need the extra horsepower though and I had planned to use this computer in my work room with a scanner.

Your technical problem is minor one. You have serious business problem relying on unsupported software essential for your day-to-day operation.

Even if you succeed now, you will face same problem when this HDD (or the Dmiension) finally goes belly up (and it will). Will you then be able to find another Dimension?

What issue did you have when trying to install and run the XP in VirtualBox?

What critical billing application do you have that you are willing to risk the business on, running on an old Dimension 2400?

Time to move on. Find some new application, and port the data over.
