Can I transfer an OS from a HDD to an SSD?

I have a hard drive with a copy of windows 7 on it, and seeing how I am on a budget for my new PC, I was wondering if it would be possible to transfer the operating system alone from that drive to my new SSD. If so could you please link me to a guide or something to walk me through the process?

Here's what I would suggest:

1. If you don't know your Windows product key code, run Belarc Advisor and print out results. It will have all your software codes
2. Create Windows ISO on USB or CD
3. Disconnect HD cable.
4. Install Windows from on SSD
5. Use product key from step 1 to activate
6. Install all drivers
7. Run Windows update as many times as it will run.
8. Check for and install any updated drivers.
9. Shut down system and reconnect HD cable.

Now you have two OS installs .... if SSD fails, you still have data access

10. Install programs / games over themselves to set up registry
