when i plug headphones/headsets into my laptop i can hear but no one can hear me when i talk. why is this

so i enjoy gaming with my friends but its become difficult to enjoy this because i cant use my headphones anymore and the problem is whenever i plug my headset in to the computer i can use them like listen to music and stuff but when i try to talk to my friends it doesnt work and they cant hear me unless i unplug them and sometimes i need them plugged in so it just causes a hassle for me. any idea on how to fix this?

Well, maybe your mic is broken, if you have integrated one use that instead. If not - try with another mic/headset to see if thats the case. It could also be some program setings, check if it works in another program (skype, oovoo, ts, ventrilo, rc). Also see if your mic is enabled in windows settings
