Strange new problem involving secondary drive

I run a Samsung 840 EVO SSD for my OS (Win 8.1) and a few programs. The rest of my data, principally games is on a 1TB WD Blue WD10EZEX drive. Starting some months ago, some of my games were experiencing frame rate drops and loading issues which I attributed to problems with the HDD. This proved to be accurate as performance improved when I relocated them to the SSD.

Fast forward to now, I was installing a new game, and during the process was experiencing issues where windows would stop responding. This escalated to the point where I was forced to do a hard reboot. Upon restarting the computer, it would be stuck of the start up screen, with further attempts at restarting initiating the automatic windows repair (which would not function either). Removal of the HDD prior to restarting allowed a normal start-up and login.

Attempting to reinsert the HDD after start-up initially did nothing, and the device did not register in the disc manager. Following a short period of time the troubles resumed. Clearly there is a problem with the HDD, but I don't know if there is any way to resolve it in order to use the drive again.

I plan on purchasing a new HDD anyway, as I was needing more space, but I would like to be able to use this one in the interim, as well as move some data from it, primarily pictures though, so if nothing can be done nothing will be lost.

Welcome to Tom's Hardware, Paleoman12!

I'm sorry to see you struggle with the WD Blue drive. Have you tried plugging the drive using a different SATA cable or switching the SATA port itself? Are you able to get it detected in Disk Management or Device Manager on your computer? I'd suggest you to try it on another PC as well and see how the Blue will react there.
If you can successfully recognize it in your system, I'd recommend testing it by running the quick and extended test from WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics utility. It will tell us what is the health and SMART status of the HDD. Here's the download link to the tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=e2TvBj

I was able to get the computer to start with the HDD plugged in, I ran a quick test, it failed with status code 07. Failure checkpoint 97. I am going to run the extended now.

I was able to get the computer to start with the HDD plugged in, The SMART status is positive, I ran a quick test, it failed with status code 07. Failure checkpoint 97. I also ran an extended test, which found irreparable bad sectors on the drive.

This is very unfortunate, Paleoman12! :( Be patient with the extended test though, it might take some time due to the capacity of the WD Blue. However, it seems like you are dealing with a faulty hard drive, since it should have passed the quick test at least.
I'd recommend you to check the warranty of your drive here, while running the test: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=aCBiHr
If it's still covered by the warranty, get in touch with our tech support and send out your RMA request to get a replacement.

Hope this helps. Let me know what was the end result though!

Thanks for all the help, it looks like there are some irreparable bad sectors. It's not under warranty any more, but I did purchase an extended service plan with newegg. I was able to recover the data that I need though, and even if I don't get the drive repaired or replaced, I am pleased that it lasted this long, considering it has moved to montana and back, and been in a car accident on the way!
