Something is causing the fans on my graphics card to speed up and slow down randomly. sapphire tri-x radeon r9 290.

Hi, so as the title says, the fans on my graphics card are acting rather strangely. A few days ago, whilst playing a very non-demanding game (the original Deus Ex), my gpu fans seemed to speed up to what I assumed was 100%. I wasn't monitoring my fan speed in game, but i was monitoring my gpu and cpu temps (with MSI afterburner) and neither were above 50 degrees C, so there is no reason my fans should have sped up like that. I exited the program and the fan speed went back to normal. I added fan speed to in-game monitoring and relaunched the game. The fans ran at 20% but after about 10 minutes of playing the fans revved up again for about 5 seconds before slowing down to their normal speed. I didn't immediately close the game that time when they sped up. Strangely, the in-game monitor did not change from 20%. The temperatures for my gpu and cpu were under still 50 degrees C. I once again decided to close the game went about searching to see if others have had the same issue and if there was a solution.

During the time I spent just browsing the web, my fans, at random times, sped up for about 5 seconds then slowed down. Just browsing the web my gpu temperature remains somewhere between 37 and 39 degrees C, so my fans shouldn't be speeding up. Monitoring my fan speed while browsing never changed from 20%, even during the speed boosts. Finally I decided to shut down my computer and see if the problem persisted the next day.

It did, so I figured the next logical thing I should do is check to update my drivers. I went on AMD's website and installed the recently released beta drivers. At first I thought all was well and good because after browsing the web and playing a few games (non-demanding games for my pc including the original deus ex, portal 1, and battleblock theater) for a few hours, the problem seemed to be gone. Eventually however, I started getting random and drastic increases in fan speed again while both browsing the web and playing these games. None of the games pushed my gpu temperature above 55 degrees C. When the fans speed up, my monitor which is msi afterburner does not indicate that the fans are going any faster than 20%.

Does this just mean my card is defective? It's pretty much new, purchased in march and put into a brand new pc in the same month, but in two months I've been using it this is the first time I've had any problem.

Additional notes: After the fans return to their normal speed, the fans make a clicking noise for a while, that eventually stops. Also, I've noticed my CPU and GPU are idling at a slightly (3-4 degrees C) higher temperature.

The rest of my specs:
i5-4460
8 gb ddr3 ram
h97 mobo
650w gold PSU
OS on 128 gb SSD
storage 1T HDD

Your GPU temp is most likely not getting above 55 because of the ramp up in your fans, personally i think the GPU is fine and the bios and whatnot is just ramping the fans up to keep the GPU cool, just because a game isnt demanding doesn't mean that the GPU isn't going to generate heat especially with an R9 290

Sounds like a temputure problem for sure. Install a program such as GPU-Z and moniter your temp as your playing, if it goes high, then you know you have a problem. After that you'll have to speculate weather its 1-Bad circulation in your case 1b.not enough airflow in your case 2.GPU fans are not sufficently cooling or their might be an issue with the GPU
