Opinion requested on ISPs!

It's a dangerous thing to openly ask the internet for opinions. Not unlike asking Pandora if she has an extra box you can borrow. Anyways, I'm moving to the DC area for a few months and need to get an internet provider so I can study for the Tennessee Bar while my wife is on a traveling nurse assignment. I've never lived there, but I looked up on whitefence.com (very handy) which ISPs are available in the area I'm most likely moving to.

It looks like I'll be choosing between Xfinity and Verizon Fios. I'm currently living in Alabama and have Charter cable internet at 60/5 (down/up). The two options I'm looking at are Xfinity at 105/10 or Fios at 50/50 (down/up). I love the idea of having a fast upload speed and don't know that I will appreciate the difference between 50 and 105 down. But I could be wrong. Any thoughts on positives and negatives about the two companies or their services? Also if it helps, I have Verizon cell service now.

Thanks,
Shawn

download speeds over 40mbs are only appreciated through multi-streaming or large downloads. The issue also lies in the fact it might be great for one isp over the other in a certain area. Best bet woudl be to try to ask people who live near where you are.

I currently have Verizon Fios, and I am completely happy with the service (Dallas/Fort Worth area). I've never heard of Xfinity, so no opinion on that.As far as having Verizon cell service, it is completely separate form the Fios service, The only thing is that you can get both to show up on the same bill.

http://consumerbroadband.org/verizon-fios-vs-comcast No data caps and faster speeds for verizon. Comcast has a 250gig limit a month after that you are throttled or cut off. 250 gig is a lot, but a month of heavy streaming and gaming downloads can cap that.

BLAH! Thanks for telling me that! I've heard that people have problems with Comcast, but I didn't know they had data limits. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but my router keeps data usage statistics on my internet usage... and let's just say that I've been known to go above 250GB/mo. And by "known to" I mean I consistently go above 250GB/mo.

The only downside is that Fios is more expensive. If I remember correctly around $25 more a month.

Well looking directly at the Verizon site now, maybe it's not that much more expensive. But I am worried about the contract terms. I am only there for about three months, so I can't really sign a 2-year agreement. Guess I'll have to talk to them to see what their prices are.

Yes it is all about how you talk. They can pretty much send any speed at any budget with the right talk. Yeah the cap thing is real and sucks.
