GTX 970 vs R9 290x or wait for 300 series

Upgrading from a GTX 760. Will be playing on 1920x1080. Should I buy a GTX 970, R9 290x or wait for the new AMD 300 series. The 970 is slightly faster and a lot more efficient. However is more expensive than the R9 290x, which is less efficient but cheaper. Or wait for the new 300 series? Thanks

Well that depends, can you wait for an uncertain amount of time that lays between a month and three months? Then do that and get an AMD 300 series. I've been waiting months to get it, it was supposed to come out last month, but there's been no news and I'm getting impatient. If you can wait, DEFINITELY do it. If you can't go ahead and get the 970, it's an amazing card.

Tomshardware acutally just posted an article a few minutes ago it would seem that says that if you want something from the 300 series, you'll have to wait until the end of the summer. Believe me, I want one, badly, but I plan to get my new build in a couple of weeks, so I know I'm not waiting. If you want it, wait for it. But believe me, you'll be plenty satisfied with a gtx 970 or r9 290x, they're EXCELLENT cards, don't worry, you'll love 'em.

i know AMD will launching theirs sometime in Q2. i think they already talking about launching their new series in their latest earnings. even AMD should be aware that not launching anything new will cost them dearly (and it's already happening). it will be interesting how long AMD going to keep R300 series around before coming up with R400 series. if they keep their current pace (only coming up with new series for every 2 years or so then by the time nvidia pascal arrive things could get even worse than it is right now.

If I were you, I would hold out for the R3XX series. The 760 is still a plenty capable card, even though it's definitely not as powerful as the current lineup of GPUs from Team Red and Green. If you're not going to wait, I would go with the 970.

Even if none of the new GPUs from AMD please you, they will force AMD to drop the price of the 290Xs and it will force Nvidia to drop the price of their 970s, to be competitive.

Any way you go, you are getting a very good GPU.
