3GB usable out of 12GB for Windows 8 64-bit

What's your OS? 32 or 64bit? Does the 8GB work by itself? and if so does it show/use the full 8GB?

What happens when you remove the 4gb module and only have the 8GB module installed? If it doesn't work.. then it sounds like you might have bought bad ram. Do both of them have the same timings... did you remember to doublecheck from your BIOS?
