r9 270 is actually a better choice than 270x, they are identical chips, at different clocks, the r9 270 easily overclocks into same levels of 270x oc, can be found much cheaper too.

I suggest going with a r9 280, best price/performance, that is if your psu can handle it.

r9 270 and up are very capable of playing the latest games 1080p 60+ FPS on high settings, not ultra but high works great.
r9 280 can play any game out there on its high/mostly ultra settings out there, same with a gtx 960.

Nobody can wholeheartedly recommend anything without knowing what PSU you have. If you can't provide a make and model, tell us the wattage that the +12V rail(s) is rated for; you can find this information on the side of the PSU. We also need to know how many PCIe connectors it has.

Finally, we need to know the make and model of your motherboard to verify that it supports PCIe 2.0 or 3.0. Anything less than that and your motherboard will also need to be upgraded.

If you have a low wattage psu, it might be worth looking into the 750ti, which is slower than all of these cards, but still can play most games on high/some medium settings, and some models dont even need external power, they just draw it all from the pice slot.
