smoking motherboard when I tested the components.

Hi I could really use some advice. Yesterday I finally put together my first gaming build however the graphics card does not arrive until tomorrow so once I wired everything up I figured ok I'm going to check to see if it turns on etc. I turned it on and then there was a funny smell and the instant I saw smoke I unplugged it.

I have a 8350fx amd cpu and asus sabertooth r2.0 mobo 16gb of gskill ram a corsair h60 watercooler and an Antec 750w platinum modular power supply.

Since the smoke the computer still turns on and then the only lights that indicate any problems on my mobo are the vga lights which makes sense since I don't have a graphics card installed but also the boot device led remains red. Is this because I have not installed on OS or because there is no graphics card plugged in. Or did the smoke mean I damaged something and at this point I will need to RMA a component. Which I really really don't want to do because I only have two weeks of fun before my summer classes start.

Thank you in advance for anyone who took the time to help.

Also after the motherboard was smoking I re checked all the wires and adjusted the tightness of my watercooler header to the cpu and since then I have had no issues with smoke. I think I over tightened the water cooler to the cpu.

I've heard stories of people who forgot to take off the water cooler's protective plastic film where it contacts with he CPU, which will of course burn. Look over that motherboard really good and make sure no plastic protective film is still on it.

Good luck!

But shouldn't I wait for my gpu to see if it's going to work fine. I don't want to RMA it if there isn't an issue for all I know the smoke was one of my girlfriends hairs getting current through it because there were a lot of hairs I found while putting it all together. I doesn't smoke anymore and I've had it running for a good 5 minutes without any smoke.

I didnt leave any plastic wrap on the cpu cooler I remember because I got a little thermal paste on my pinky while installing the cooler. Also since then I have checked to make sure the thermal compound got on the cpu head which it did thank you for your reply though
