Crossfire MSI R9 270x Water Cooled Help

Hello! I recently water cooled my pair of MSI R9 270x graphics cards. This went well and the components were not damaged as far as I can see. The first time I turned on my PC, I opened Device Manager and it said it detected two, however, there was a yellow triangle with an ! sign in it, and so, having dealt with problems like this before, I (for some reason) decided the best thing to do would be to delete the one with the error from the Device Manager. It has now been a week and I cannot get it to detect the 2nd card. I have attempted to plug just the non-detected one in, however, it launches to the login in screen and then my screen goes black and the monitors go to sleep. It is really frustrating and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

P.S. Please don't hate on my Crossfire 270x's, I get that a lot, but they have always worked well for me.

Throwing it out there, have you tried each card singly first? Just to make sure one didn't go bad? If that goes well with each card, perhaps put them both in without the crossfire cable and load drivers then try to crossfire them?

Yes, the one works fine, and I can run my pc, however, it does heat up a lot under load, I am currently working on that. The other one, ever since I deleted it from the Device Manager does not work. It will get to the login screen (8.1) then goes black iirc. Thanks for responding.

Hmm do you have another PC you can try that card it? that might be the problem, or you can use that card, and try to boot into safe-mode, no drivers there if it doesn't work that card might be dead.

Yes, I can try that tonight.

No problem. Also shouldn't need to do this but worth a try, from device manager you can try to detect new hardware with that extra card in, I don't know if it will find it, you shouldn't have to do it but who knows :)

Unfortunately, I have tried that, quite a few times and it won't find it.

Ok, so I put it in another pc and the following happened:
1. Booted succesfully.
2. Overheated and I realized that the water block was not making contact.
3. Fixed that
4. Plugged back in.
5. Booted succesfully, no problems this time.
6. Checked device manager. It says Default VGA Graphics Adapter.
7. Tried scanning for new hardware, nada.
8. Tried the "update driver" button, says up to date.
9. Tried downloading the 14.12 (newest) version of catalyst. (It is a NVidia/Intel PC)
10. That installed, I opened the AMD Gaming Evolved app and it says error detecting hardware.
11. Unplugged and put back in other graphics card.

I did deal with this same sort of not detecting problem when I first built my PC last summer. However, that I solved with no problem.

Another note: when I use my PC to try to do anything stressful, like play even a not-intense game, it tries for a bit, then turns the screen off and the fan all the way up. :(

Hmm so its the same thing more or less? 1 GPU working well the other still fighting? Since it's been in two PC's with the same results the card seems to be the issue.

I wonder if a BIOS flash to the card would help it out, may be just a last resort. Or it's too unstable and will make the card worse. Can you RMA that card? I gotta feeling that's the place to start.

They are MSI OC 2GB'S
I used Corsair Hydro H60's attached with the original brackets from the stock heatsink.

Well I voided the warranty installing the cooler but, idk. I don't know about a BIOS flash. Thanks :)

Update: I was able to play The Sims 4 for an hour with the temp steady a 51 C. I tried again yesterday, but it spiked to 120 C then shut off. I checked the contact between the cooler and the card and tightened it.

I had about a quarter of a tube left over from last year's build, so I used that on the card. It was high quality stuff.

Ok, so it's a few days later and the single gpu is working well. Overclocking has been very successful and so far temps have been great (once I figured out that I unplugged the pump for the cooler)

Still looking for a solution for the other card. I have done a visual check of that one and there doesn't seem to be anything burned out or anything like that. I could send pictures of the card if you want to see for yourself. As for now, thank you very much for your help :)

Update: I did it! I plugged both cards into my PC and screwed them in and such. I plugged it back in and turned it on and it detected an unknown device. I updated the driver using the one that was already installed for my other card and then restarted. I switched on crossfire and checked the temps. They were all good at 29 degrees C at rest. I ran furmark at 1080p and it went up to around 50 degrees C with overclocking on both cards.

Overall, thanks for the help and I'm so glad it worked out in the end. :) :) :)
