Makes sense, but it seems you'd be better off saving money with a 60Hz monitor, and cranking up MSAA, with a R9 280X.

A GTX 970 should push closer to 144Hz and let you crank settings and stay future-proof a little longer.

The week link here is your CPU. At least grab a FX 8350 or jump over to an i5-4440 build.

Everything else should be fine, although, a few of the more demanding games may need there settings lowered if you really want to take advantage of the "144Hz" part of your monitor.

I should change that to the slightly slower, but much cheaper FX-8320, or the better equipped i5-4590 on the Intel side. Probably depends on the sales and/or combo deals on the day you pull the trigger.

Intel is generally better for gaming these days, even though you're getting fewer cores, most games depend more on the throughput of the individual cores, once you have at least 4. Most games are also starting to take advantage of 4 cores, so a dual core, (or shared quad cores like the 4300) are going to hold you back.

I'm not sure if a R9 280X would be able to push 144Hz to a 1080p display. 60 sure, but that kind of defeats the purpose.

My overclocked R9 280 gets around 60-70 with slightly reduced settings (still very high textures, no MSAA). I extrapolated for the 280X.

What is a i5+h97 setup? Lol and why should i go down in graphics? sorry im a newbie lol

That is a socket 1155 processor, it is slightly older tech and you will need to find a compatible motherboard.

Do you already have some of these parts? I was assuming you were building a PC from scratch.

You want an i5-4XXX series ("Haswell") processor, no reason to go with an older i5-3XXX ("Ivybridge") model unless there's a deal. You want a H97 motherboard to go along with it a Haswell CPU. If you plan to overclock, you need a i5-4XXX(k) processor (ends in a k), and a Z97 motherboard.

It's pretty easy to assemble a PC yourself. You should be fine, with 4 hours and a youtube video. Feel free to take it somewhere if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself.

If you already have the parts you listed, you still want to upgrade your CPU to play those games maxed out.

Very true. But if he's playing Smite, LoL, CS:GO, etc on the side then a 290x will very easily run 144Hz and give a great quick response rate for a competitive player. Just depends on what the OP is playing I suppose.
