New mobo, new PSU, old CPU. No beeps or display.

Hey there, I've gone through a few threads and have a general idea that my CPU is shot, but figured I would ask. I'm currently using my phone to browse being that my only PC is not starting so I apologize if this is formatted weirdly.

(Also, I overdid it with the Arctic Silver 5 when I first built this PC and it was leaking over the top, but it didn't seem to get anywhere on the CPU pins or motherboard if this detail matters)

So what happened was a few days ago, my computer sparked and smelled like burning when I started it up. I left it alone for a day and tried to boot up. Nothing happens. One of the individual fans inside my case jerks for a second but nothing else. In my impatience and stubbornness, I thought it was the PSU that died (didn't make sense. was using a Corsair HX1050, but hey shit happens) and ordered a new PSU (750W).

New PSU comes in, I plug everything in to test it, nothing. Same results. I take out everything but the CPU and mobo speaker (RAM, my 2 GPUs, front panel connections, HDD) and there's no memoryerror beep when I start up, but it dots get the fans running and on, but nothing else. So now I figure it's the mobo being dead because of no beeps and I go ahead and order a new mobo.

New mobo comes in. I clean and reapply ceramique2, get the heatsink on, get the CPU power plugged in, get the mobo power plugged in and I start it up. Same thing as the new PSU. The computer turns on with fans running, but no beeps. I tried it again with RAM and one GPU plugged in, but nothing. No display, no beeps.

Is it most likely my CPU that's dead? Any way to test just the CPU? Any ideas would be appreciated!

Solution
Hi, If the case speaker does work, is correctly connected, and no beeps with only CPU and CPU fan, then yes, it looks like a CPU issue.

I'm 90% sure the speaker works. I haven't really paid it any attention, but I'm certain it worked when I first built the PC. Any idea what caused it?

Do you have any idea how AMD's warranty works for CPUs? I bought it in August 2014. Non-OC or anything, cooled with a Cooler Master Seidon 240M.

Here's the parts in question in case this helps:

CPU: AMD FX-9370 (link)
Old mobo: MSI 970A-G43 (link)
New mobo: MSI 970A-G46 (link
Old PSU: Corsair HX1050 (link)
New PSU: EVGA 750G1 750W (link)

The motherboard and CPU are NOT compatible. There are only a few boards that will properly support a 9xxx series FX. Your board simply cannot deliver the power a 220w cpu requires. Here's a list of supported boards.

Are you sure? The old mobo has about the same specs and ran fine with the CPU for about 14 months before this issue came up. 14 months could be really short for all I know, I'm not the greatest at tech.

You got lucky. I'm surprised the vrms didn't blow up.

The 9xxx will sometimes run on non supported boards since they are basically an 8350 with a big overclock and a gob of added voltage. Usually they just aren't stable as the VRMS can't keep up and/or overheat and cause the cpu to throttle which will show up in games as lag and fps lag spikes. Also if the HX1050 still works, use it. Its a higher quality unit than the G1.

No burn marks visible on the neither mobo. Gonna return the new one and what d'you think about the Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0? I think it can support the FX9370, but needed to make sure and get an opinion.

Well, we know why the old mobo quit working in 14 months, the fx 9370 fried it.

And why did you swap psu, you went with lower wattage and quality?

That boards does support the 9370.

The MSI 970A-G46 may be the worst AM3+ board ever made. Google exploding vrm's and vrm fires. I wouldn't even use it with a 95 watt cpu let alone a 220 watt beast.

Sabertooth 990 FX came in.

Installed CPU and cooling system.
Plugged in CPU fan.
Plugged in CPU power.
Installed RAM.
Installed GPU.
Plugged in monitor.
Plugged in GPU power.
Installed HDD and power.
Plugged in keyboard.
Installed motherboard speaker.
Plugged in motherboard power.

Turn it on, motherboard light is on, nothing on the monitors, no beeps.
Tried it with both RAM in. Same thing.
Tried it with no RAM in. Same thing.

Any suggestions?

Yeah, after the non compatible mobo/CPU, I figure I would need it anyway since I really like this CPU and would buy the same one if it is busted, which may seem to be the case. +2 to you for maybe having the correct answer first. My brother's also flying in tonight so I'll see if he'll take a look at it tomorrow morning for another opinion.
