How to get my internet to get more stable?

I have a Virgin Media router (not the newest one) and is generally very good. I have great down speeds (50mbps) and ok up (3mbps) which is great normally but sometimes my ping just gets extremely unstable during games but websurfing and watching youtube works perfectly. I was playing CS GO today and for a few minutes i had 40 ping but then a few rounds later it kept going to 1000 and back to 40 and then back to 1000. It made the game unplayable. I am using a wifi connection on my laptop where I get a 2 bar which is normally good for gaming. I don't know if it's a problem in my laptop or the router (which is quite old but works fine most of the time). I just want to make my connection more stable that's all. Maybe a poweline if it works. Anything. Thanks for your time.

Try hard wiring to the router and see if the connection is stable that way. If so, then it is a wireless issue. If it does turn out to be a wireless issue, you can try changing the wireless channel to find the most stable one for you (or an auto function if available that should scan multiple channels to select the cleanest one available). Also try moving closer to the router to get better signal to see if that helps. If so then you know that you will need to either play closer or invest in something like a wifi range extender.

If you're getting the same experience while hard wired into the router then give Virgin a ring. Keep pressuring them to send and engineer out and once they do he/she will probably play around with your upstream/downstream power levels and hopefully give you a more stable connection.

Test with a wired connection to see if it is a wireless issue.

Does the slowness hit at certain time of the day? Some ISP's oversell their bandwidth presuming not everyone will be on at the same time, but if a lot of users are on it at the same time, you will see slowdowns and even drops.
