Could you be more specific about what types of things you'll be using it for for "studying".

Could make a difference in how much RAM/kind of CPU you'd want...

Per Microsoft, the minimums for Server 2012R2 are as follows:

1.4GHz 64-bit processor
512MB RAM
32GB hard drive space.

Virtually anything you can build for 400 bucks will meet this, and quite easily exceed the minimum specs. Get something with even a 2GHz dual core and 2GB of RAM and it should work, if sluggishly. (This could be a benefit as it might make it easier to watch what's happening as you do your training exercises.) Anything more you can throw at the hardware will help, with RAM and processor being your major concerns for performance increases.

Unless your doing builds for business/computations that require/would benefit from business/computation- specific features, you can often leave out Xeons and server-grade boards. Xeons are more expensive even for 4-core E3's than most i5's are. Server boards (and Xeons) also support ECC/buffered/registered memory, which you don't need usually unless your application requires the single bit memory corrects that ECC provides (also more expensive).

Creating a server for you business-Xeon/server board
Creating a build for scientific calculations-Xeon/server board
Anything that is mission-critical (important to the success of you business)-Xeon and server boards

For a home server, game server, file server, or anything generally not commercial related you can build systems with standard consumer components for much cheaper and will usually be better suited to what you want.
i.e. game servers usually benefit from higher clock speeds/single core performance(i3/i5/i7), not having more cores(Xeon).

so the most cheap solution is to install vmplayer on my computer and run from there the windows server 2012 r2 to start "playing " and learn from there...thanks a lot for your opinions people.
