Hi all, I'm looking to buy an R9 290X graphics card (probably going to be Sapphire) but read a lot about how hot this card can get.

My coolermaster case is too small for the triple fan model. It's currently fitted out with:

Coolit Eco II C240 advanced liquid cooler
1x140mm fan on the front
1x120mm fan at the back
1x140mm fan on top
Corsair TX650 PSU

Will this be enough to keep a 2-fan R9 290X reasonably cool?

Yes it would keep the dual x at a decent temp, the cards that got really hot was the reference cards with the blower that ran at 95c unless you liked a jet engine in your computer case. The aftermarket coolers do a much better job.

Never buy GPU with liquid cooling or you,ll regret this
try TRIX ones with three fans
liquid cooling has a lot of problems
but u can keep other ones cool too
by doing :
Open AMD Catalyst Control Center then Click on AMD OVER DRIVE
and accept then go to AMD GPU OVERDRIVE TAB
check GPU over drive ENABLE
Then Set GPU TEMP TARGET TO 75
and FAN SPEED TO 75
then accept and apply
after that download ASUS GPU TWEAK and monitor the temp
it,ll never go over 74
Worked for me and my friend hope it helps u
But about the smell of burned rubber u better contact AMD
:D Hope it helped
