Best media players/codecs setup

Hello,

I just built my system
Core i5-4460
GTX 960 2GB
8GB Ram 1600MHz
Samsung EVO 250GB SSD
21.5" ASUS VX229H Monitor

My monitor supports 1080p so is my limit for videos. I think performance will not be an issue at this resolution but I want a setup with best possible quality.

I tried google and got lost in lots and lots of stuff. Please guide me with a short list which I just install for the best quality results. (Don't care for free or paid just the best)

I'm happy with Windows Media Player. But a LOT of contributors here recommend VLC - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

Best Codec - MP4 - best compression and best S/N ratio. Universal.

I meant. If they are costing some thing do they offer better results in terms of quality than vlc/ media player or should I stick with vlc and media players.

You should try out VLC and see if you like it.

If you're happy with it then stick with it. Else try VLC. Or even Windows Media Player.
