So I recently turned an old Dell Optiplex 755 into a NAS by installing Ubuntu (desktop) and sharing the hard disk (the os is on a USB drive). Problem is, when I try to connect with my mac it connects and shows the folder "NAS". Then, when I open that folder I get this:

The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “NAS” can’t be found.

I have Googled the issue and I have gotten a lot of information that makes no sense to me, and most of the people had power outages prior to the problem, and that is not my situation. What can I do?

The mac is a mid 2012 MBP (not retina) running Yosemite.

If it makes a difference, I am connected to Ethernet on both the NAS and my mac. There is also a Time capsule on the network that I can access without an issue.

Solution
If you want to use the Dell as a NAS you might find it simpler to use a dedicated setup such as NAS4Free rather than Ubuntu. If you really want to stick with Ubuntu then I would suggest that you use regular Samba file sharing rather than configuring it via Nautilus.

How are you sharing the folder? Samba, NFS, etc. What are the permissions on the share?

If you're running a Samba server, try connecting from the Mac using cifs://SERVER/SHARE

I tried connecting via cifs://SERVER/SHARE (and played around with replacing server with the actual name, etc. and always got this:

The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.

I then tried putting the NAS's IP address in, then connect as a guest and got this:

The share does not exist on the server. Please check the share name, and then try again.

Couple more things to check:
1) What are the permissions for the share?
2) Is the NAS running a firewall?
3) Assuming it's using Samba, is the Samba server actually running? (look for smbd in ps listing)
4) Can you connect to the shared folder in Nautilus using the loopback address (127.0.0.1)?
