Hi I have a Western Digital world book 1Tb NAS, that has stopped working.
The light does not even power up.
I removed the HDD and connected to PC with SATA cable and power.
The disk does not come up on 'My computer', but does in Device Manager and Disk Management.

In Disk Management, can see all its partitions, but labelled as Healthy (unknown partition).
I cannot assign volume label, as only option on right-click is to 'Delete partition"
Have run CHKDSK: can see disk from 'list disk' but not if 'list volume'.

I assume there is a fault with Hdrive. what is best free software to fix, or if need to recover data?

Welcome, Karoohunter!

I'm very sorry to hear about your WD My Book World issues. :( I'm not sure you will be able to access the data through Windows by plugging it internally. NAS drives use a different file system. I'd recommend contacting one of our data recovery partners, since they would be your best chance at getting your data back. Here's a list you can refer to: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=PQRPho

Another thing you can try while plugged in your Windows computer is testing the drive's health and checking up on the SMART status using Data LifeGuard Diagnostics tool. It should be able to pick up the drive, just make sure you run the QUICK and the EXTENDED test from the utility: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=NzAxHS

I guess you could try using some third-party data recovery software tools at your own risk. However, I'm not sure that any of the Windows-working utilities would be helpful with a NAS drive, but I guess you can give the Ubuntu Live CD a shot. Check these thread:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/291895-32-best-data-recovery-software
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/51465-63-ubuntu-recover-windows-files

I strongly recommend you to keep backups of your data on at least two different locations in the future, this way you will save yourself from the headaches of data loss! :/

Good luck! Hope I was helpful!

Hi SuperSoph,
I had already run the QUICK version of Data LifeGuard Diagnostics tool, with no errors. I am currently running the EXTENDED version. Will see what results I get.

I had previously connected the HDD internally to recover some data I had accidentally erased. Then I had no issues seeing the volume.
The NAS has been running well for 7years.
If I loose the HDD not the end of the world. I have just purchased a WD Cloud 4Tb mirror for future issues.
Hopefully i can recover some data.

Well, I guess you can give it a try! I hope you will successfully recover your data! :) You must have been taking good care of the NAS, 7 years is a long time, indeed! I guess the WD My Cloud Mirror would be a good substitute for the failed My Book World! I'm using the same My Cloud Mirror at home, configured in RAID 1 for double protection and I'm pretty satisfied with the streaming, performance and fast remote access.

I wish you have the same experience as well! Best of luck! :)

I ran the EXTENDED version of Data LifeGuard Diagnostics tool, also with no errors. Surely if there were bad sectors this would show up?
SMART status for drive is OK.
How do i know if it the HDD or the NAS housing etc that is faulty?

I installed the fs-driver from http://www.fs-driver.org/
This way i could read ext3 disk in windows, thus able to assign volume letter.
No problem to see data now!! :)
Guess the NAS machine was damaged!

Hi again, Karoohunter!

Good job with the third-party utility that lets you access the data! :)
Unfortunately, enclosures happen to fail as well, indeed. It might be from overheating. It might also be the SATA bridge card inside, which is very fragile and sensitive. I'm truly glad you were able to retrieve your files!

Good luck with your new WD My Cloud Mirror! :)
