Hi I am trying to solve a problem where my computer freezes when I plug in this specific sata hard drive.

Windows detects the drive, but a prompt appears that says something along the lines of : "There's a problem with this drive. Please scan it" I can move my mouse around during this time but everything else freezes i.e I cant click on anything with the cursor.

I have tried plugging in the hard drive to another computer and the same issue crops up, so the problem probably lies in the hard drive itself.

Have googled and tried many methods found on forums to solve this and the problem still persists. The hard drive does not work even if plugged in before boot, and I am unable to run any diagnostics as the computer is rendered useless when it is plugged in.
If it is not possible to fix the hard drive, is it possible to salvage the data? I have some fairly important documents in there.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there 24Duckies,

As your system can't boot/operate properly when the drive is attached to it, then I guess you should use some data recovery software for DOS. Many users try the Ubuntu Live CD approach in similar cases. Check this out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode
After you recover your data, it may be a good idea to test the drive with a brand specific testing tool for DOS(or a third party one).

It will not hurt to try changing the USB cable before all of this. :)

Hope this will help,
