Hello, I'm looking into a cpu upgrade for my Dell Inspirion 3847 that came with the Pentium G3240. Specs of CPU - http://ark.intel.com/products/80796/Intel-Pentium-Processor-G3240-3M-Cache-3_10-GHz

Also my PC Specs from Best Buy - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspiron-desktop-4gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-black/5859014.p?id=1219165153058&skuId=5859014

The G3240 has served me well so far and most games I play have no issues majority of the time like Shadow of Mordor which I avg with my last benchmark @1080p with the XLR8 PNY GTX 750 @68 avg 127max with everything set to high, except textures low for 1 gb limits, at the time the gpu was not overclocked. Since then I overclocked the GTX 750.

So, based off my performance I get great performance but am interested in the overclocking capabilities of the G3258 cpu which I read here from a review on newegg that states - "4.4ghz on stock cooling 100% stable for 5+ months, I have this in an inexpensive gaming rig build and it's a beast. I purchased this as a budgetary measure until I could upgrade to an i5 or i7 down the road. It's been so blazing fast for everything I do I haven't even thought of upgrading." Source - http://www.newegg.com/Product/SingleProductReview.aspx?reviewid=4293949

and here about it matching the I7-4790K when overclocked - "At 4.3 GHz, in terms of single and dual core performance, the G3258 challenges a fully overclocked i7-4790K, the fastest CPU I have seen to date! These results are stunning considering that the G3258 is retailing for around one fifth as much as an i7-4790K." So, my question. Is it worth upgrading to the G3258 for overclocking @4.3 ghz or save up more for the I5-4440. Also if I went with the G3258 will my Dell Motherboard support the CPU despite it being of the same socket of 1150 LGA and its overclocking capabilities?

So far, I assume it will since my GPU overclocked easily with no issues from the motherboard.

I appreciate any help/advice on this before I make my decision on a cpu upgrade. :)

Well I did check on the Intel h81 cpu support and it appears according to the charts that the G3258 is supported. Also did confirm that overclocking on the intel h81 is possible, now how possible is one I'm willing to risk purchasing the G3258 for. Overall, I made my choice and will deal with whatever issues may come. :)

You probably should just save up for the i5. Assuming the 3258 overclocks spectacularly, it still won't make up for not having 4 cores. It really depends on what you are doing. Besides, in order to get a great overclock that will be stable for many years, you need an aftermarket cooler, which can be expensive.
