Hello experts,
I am planning to upgrade my desktop and I would like to retain some of my old parts. The primary reason for upgrade is to be able to play some latest games at 1080 settings.

a. Radeon 6450 1GB
b. WD 1 tb HDD
c. Case

Planning to buy:-
a AMD FX 6300
b. 8GB DDR 3 1600 Kingston Hyperx Blu or Corsair DDR 3
c. Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard
d. Cooler master cpu cooler
e. Cooler master thunder 600 watts SMPS

Let me know if I will be able to play games at 1080 settings. Also, any suggestions regarding sourcing the parts would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on the game, that video card is rather long in the tooth. If you can afford it, for around 90-100 USD you can get something that will destroy that card (like a R7 260x 2gb). Beyond that, your other parts are fine.

Thanks for the response.

Any motherboard recommendation for the said specification for around $100?

Honestly , AMD only has one CPU capable for playing latest titles 'as recommended' and that is the FX-8xxx. Normally people buy i5s to have a gaming PC, but in all instances your looking at around $700 for all the 'hardware' costs to meet your goals you outlined. If that is 'way too much' and you only have a 'couple hundred' go PS4 then for as little as $200. It plays GTA V at 1080P High settings 30FPS, which that 'planning to buy' doesn't even meet the recommended to do the same thing as a PS4 http://www.geforce.com/games-applications/pc-games/grand-theft-auto-v/system-requirements .

PS4 also plays MANY titles 1080P @ 60FPS as well, and you always know the game WILL play on your PS4, but with a PC well... you can buy a game and never be able to play it because you don't have the hardware capable to play it.

You can't re-use the video card, the 6450 is horrible for games, even older ones. You need to put aside another 100 for a video card for sure.
If you can't quite get there for budget, I would remove the aftermarket cooler and use the stock and drop RAM to a single 4 gig stick in favor of a new video card, then get a second 4 gig stick when you can.

I would head over to the system section of the forum and do a search there for your budget amount, you should see quite a few build suggestions.

Thanks for your response. The aftermarket cooler is worth $17 and if I drop both the items as suggested the total savings is about $47. I'm assuming that 4GB RAM wouldn't affect the performance too much.

Hey Tom,

Was watching NCIX tech tips a couple of days ago and they clearly ruled out any console whatsoever for gaming. Even a dual core if assembled with the right parts can outdo a console. I was greatly influenced by that and dropped the idea of getting a console.

Laughs. I am so sorry, so many people keep posting on here how they see stuff on Youtube and that is the end all be all truth they wish to believe. I never heard of these guys (new to me) and clicking on their feed shows they seem to be some people in connection with a sort of BestBuy of Canada. So I can't say how 'reliable' or truthful these guys maybe or not (influenced to make sales of current products or such as compared to professional news/trade companies who have specific standards on being unbiased).

That said, I am mainly going off this very accurate http://www.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/PS4_vs._Xbox_One_Native_Resolutions_and_Framerates (major publisher of all things gaming) other articles I seen on TechRadar, GameSpot, etc. all showing that if all you care about is gaming, the NEXGEN (not PS3 and definitely NOT the Xbox One) provides the following points:

1) Ease of use, anyone can pick up the controller and learn to play as all games only can use the buttons/joystick controls.
2) Price value: For $200-400 you get a 3D!! Blueray player, Wireless Controller, Gamers Heatset AND the PS4 itself, the first three items alone is $200 by itself for a PC.
3) Works EVERYTIME. You ALWAYS know a game sold to a PS4 WILL play on the PS4, PC can NOT say that (try loading GTA V on a Walmart $249 laptop/desktop, yeah not gonna happen), without ANY extra costs for hardware.
4) Like all modern BluRay Players and the like, you now get APPS, so you can watch Hulu, Netflix, etc.and always 'up to date' that it will work. No need to find a 'plugin' or update your Java or such just to watch a movie or check a webpage.
5) With a keyboard mouse attachment, for basic web surfing, FB, Twitch.TV, web email, etc. it does just as fine as any Tablet or cheap off the shelf PC from Walmart

Now downsides are mainly for 're-purposing' the PS4 to do other things, such as I can't scan my photos, can't run Photoshop, certainly can't code CSS that well for my 'games tag' website and so on. Those yes are reasons NOT to get a PS4, but if you spend $200 on a PS4, then grab a tablet for $149 or a laptop for $249, that is alot less then $700+ norm for a desktop PC Gaming system and 1/10th the normal $1500+ price for a PC Laptop for Gaming (again the hardware is the big cost here).

Most of all a PS4 isn't DIY which alot of people here on the forums love to do, even if they 'break something' (oops didn't mean to break that Titan X slot into the Mobo...) they just 'buy another' (yeah you want to pay 2X on that nice video card? Or maybe the Pins you broke on that $400 CPU? ). PS4 can't be customized to the personal preference of the individual like a PC can.

Given those real difference, ask yourself then, given the performance, cost, reliance, and ease to deal with a PS4 as compared to the PC, which is more suited for your needs?

I agree with NCIX and all the other internets people out thier that consoles blow, its a money pit, sure from the start there less expensive, but the cost for games is way to high. It also lacks alot of good titles, no real mod support and cant be upgraded.

Trust me, i like the ps4, but, im not going to pay 60 dollars per game when i can build(did build) a pc that has more games, modding support, cheaper games..list goes on.

Ill post a "full" build below.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Thanks for a detailed response Tom. This is getting confusing. I played a couple of games on Xbox one and Wii over the weekend for several hours. I was not particularly happy with the Xbox one and Wii is definitely not in the race. I don't know anyone who has a PS4, I will have to go to the nearest store and check it out. What about the price of new titles? I believe PS4 and Xbox one titles are pretty expensive compared to PC.

Hey Guys,

A couple of experts recommended the following instead of the FX6300 build.

a. Pentium G3258 3.2GHZ
b. MSIH81M P33- Micro ATX
c. Cooler Master hyper 212
d. corsair cx600w 80+ Bronze
e. crucial ballistic sports 8gb ddr3

The total cost comes to $231.

How will this fare compared to my previous build enquiry?

Hello there,
There are mixed reviews about both the processors. This is really confusing. Just out of curiosity, what happens to the Intel processor when the latest games demand more than 2 cores? Do you think it will struggle then? I presume Intel is reporting better numbers than the 6300 because games or softwares are not able to utilise more than 2 cores. Is that the case?

But you cant game without a decent graphics card?

Anyways, do not buy the 3258, it has stuttering issues even when overclocked, the cx600 has cheap chinese capicators. You would be much better off with the build i posted earlier.

Thanks for your response. I was going through this thread last night http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2389469/intel-4150-amd-6300-6350-gaming-modern-games.html.

Let me know what you think. Also, I know someone who is planning to get rid of the following for $180. Its less than 2 years old.

AMD FX 6300

8 GB DDR3

GA-880gm USB 3 rev 3.1

Hyper TX Cooler Master

Cooler Master Elite 370

VIP 500W

For that price that is a good system, although the power supply is not that good. With an nVidia 750 Ti video card it will be a good balanced system. Just make sure you run that thing though a few runs of 3DMark benchmark to make sure it does not crash during load and also run the stress test part of Prime95 to test the CPU and RAM stability.

Thanks hang-the-9,

The fellow is not ready to sell the processor and RAM they want to get rid of all the components (all or nothing). Actually I am going to keep my HD 6450 for 6 months and then perhaps think of upgrading the video card.

I know its a bottleneck but I am going to pick up my gaming interest where I left off back in 2010 (had to give up for my post graduation). Anyway, is the power supply that bad? I don't want to spend a lot right now.

I would not run a loaded system using the VIP power supply, a lot of people just look for the cheapest power supply even when they spend lots of money on the CPU and video card. What they don't realize is that if the power supply can't supply enough power, the system can shut off, reboot, have voltage fluctuations to the other components, and kill all those other fancy pricy parts.

For a lower power video card, the VIP unit will be OK to use, I would not use a card in that that uses more power than the 750 though.

Thanks hang-the-9,

Completely agree with you about SMPS. I am presuming the HD 6450 wouldn't be a problem.

Nope, should run just fine on a low power PSU.

Just keep in mind you won't be able to play games till you upgrade the video card also.

Hey guys,

A change in plan. Dropped the idea of getting an FX6300, instead I'm planning to get an Athlon860k Black edition. Wondering what motherboard to get that would not need a BIOS upgrade. My budget is around $70. Not planning to overclock anytime soon. Here is the updated build list-

Processor: AMD Athlon 860k Black edition
Mobo: Awaiting expert opinion
RAM: 8GB DDR 3 1600
PS: Antec VP500PC 500w
CPU Cooler: Need suggestion for around $20-25

Hey there,

That mobo is quite expensive in this part of the world.

I'm using some top sites such amazon.in, snapdeal.com and flipkart.com for parts. Here are my options from those sites.

Flipkart- http://www.flipkart.com/computers/computer-components/motherboards/pr?sid=6bo%2Cg0i%2Cy7i&q=fm2%2B+motherboards&p%5B%5D=facets.socket_type%255B%255D%3DFM2%252B

Amazon- http://www.amazon.in/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dcomputers&field-keywords=fm2%2B+motherboard&rh=n%3A976392031%2Ck%3Afm2%2B+motherboard&ajr=1

Snapdeal: http://www.snapdeal.com/search?keyword=fm2%2B+motherboard&santizedKeyword=&catId=&categoryId=&suggested=false&vertical=&noOfResults=20&clickSrc=go_header&lastKeyword=&prodCatId=&changeBackToAll=false&foundInAll=false&categoryIdSearched=&cityPageUrl=&url=&utmContent=&catalogID=&dealDetail=

I was particularly inclined towards this one:-
http://www.snapdeal.com/product/msi-a88xme35-mother-board/686047788937

INR 5000 is my budget. Let me know if any of the boards would do without the bios update.

The GPU you're planning to keep in your new build is not powerful enough to be even considered a gaming GPU. It's very slow, and thus would require an upgrade.

For a budget build, the FX-6300 and the 8GB of RAM on the GA-78LMT-USB3 are great, if you don't own a 5.1 speaker system.. Regardless of your sound system, I would definitely consider this board though: ASUS M5A97 R2.0
The PSU is also a great choice. Having said that, I'd need to know the country you plan to buy this hardware from. Assuming you're from the United States of America:
PSU : EVGA
MOBO: Gigabyte
If you plan to overclock the CPU, get this one instead: GA-990FXA-UD3
CPU: FX-6300
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper T4
RAM: Kingston HyperX

What exactly do you mean by "latest games" at 1080p? If you're talking GTA V, Crysis 3 and the upcoming Need For Speed, you'll absolutely need a GPU upgrade.

Worth considering minimum:
GTX 960
R9 270X

Total with
GTX 960 = $493 (with the GA-990FXA : $550)
R9 270X = $443 (with the GA-990FXA: $500)
The system is gonna be more powerful with the GTX 960.
