Hey guys,

I'm in the market for a new router. I like to tinker a little bit sometimes and I also like having good, fast wifi in the house. My main concern is the routers ability to run a vpn for a long time tho. I live in China so this is a big concern. Things like Chromecasts will not even function without being able to connect to a vpn enabled network.

I have a fast and stable internet connection, not sure exactly what it is as it's provided by the apartment building, but I think it's at least 20mbps, probably 50. So if you were going to say something about that it's all covered.

Anyway, which one - the Nighthawk or the Asus? They're both the same price here, roughly $140 so price isn't a concern.

Thanks :)

The main difference you will find is that the netgear has a faster cpu clock speed and it has a different radio chip on the 2.4g band. Both router uses the same exact chip for the 5g to support 802.11ac.

The so called 600m on the 2.4g band is dependent on encoding the data using a method borrowed from the 802.11ac. This has never been put into the 802.11n standard so many end devices do not support it. From testing it also tend to not work real well unless you are very close to the router. Still asus sells routers that claim this also, those routers use the same radio chip this netgear does on the 2.4g band.

So pretty much the only difference that really counts is the clock speed of the processor. This tends to be why the r7000...

Which is more stable on VPN is a software thing. You never really know what patch level has what bug so it is almost impossible to figure this out. Luckily both support third party firmware like dd-wrt
