Hello all,

I just purchased a Samsung Evo 850 SSD 128GB and have installed a clean version of Windows 8.1 on there. I did everything right, unplugged my old HDD, installed Windows on the SSD, called the number and activated it etc. My HDD is still there and my stuff is still on there but none of the programs work.

I'm trying to get my GPU drivers and firewall and whatnot from the old HDD as well as other programs that I had before. Is there a way to do that or do I have to reinstall everything? Whenever I click on something on the HDD it says the specified file cannot be found.

Also how do I manage partitions on my SSD? I partitioned off 30GB for the clean version of Windows but its saying that I only have 30GB. How do I unlock the rest of it?

Thanks in advance.

Whoever told you to create a 30GB partition for the OS...you should never listen to that person again. Ever.

As long as you are reinstalling on the same hardware (motherboard) you're fine for activating it again.
And you shouldn't have to call....it should do it online. Assuming you have the LAN driver installed.
You will have to reinstall all programs again on your new OS, your old installed programs on the old harddrive will not work.

To format/create a logical drive from the rest of your unused SSD space, got disk management under administrative tools/storage. Or use any other software from your harddrive vendor or 3rd party software for this.

assuming your old windows isnt bigger than the ssd you should have cloned it to the ssd

your programs wont work because they are now on D or whichever letter your old hdd has now

why partition the ssd?

use disk management to format the unallocated space

1. Partitioning that 128GB drive is a big mistake. You should have just left it at the full size. Very quickly, your OS install will grow to much larger that that 30GB.

2. Your applications. They will have to be reinstalled. "the specified file cannot be found. " is telling you it cannot find some or all of that particular application, because it is pointing to the C drive. Which is now your SSD.

So...Since this is a brand new install and nothing actually works right, my recommendation.
Start over.
-Unpartition that SSD. (you do this during the OS install)
-Install the OS using the whole drive.
-Install the drivers. You can't 'get them' from the old drive, you have to actually install them properly.
-Run all the current updates.
-Install your applications. Depending on what applications you use, most or all (apart from games) can fit on the SSD. Mine do.

Then you can designate other locations for things where the SSD speed does not matter. Docs/video/music/download.

Alright so just to clarify I have to reinstall all programs to the partition on the SSD that the OS is on? Or can I install them on the other partition that Im about to create on the SSD?

Read my above post first.

would be more sensible to format the unallocated space then extend C into it giving the full space of the ssd

Oh ok Ill just start over then. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to partition the SSD. I was reading a guide that told me to partition it to 30gb so thats what I did.

It's no biggie I literally just booted it up so Ill just reinstall it again. Question though, how many times can I call that Windows 1-800 number to reactivate my OS? I've already done it once is there a limit or something?

and although you could actually dig out the drivers from the old hdd

with internet access you can just download the drivers any way--make sure you at least have the ethernet or wireless driver ok on flash drive etc so you can access the net if windows doesnt install those automatically
