My computer hasn't been able to play pc games with respectable frames unless i drop all my settings down.

I7-4790 3.6 ghz
16 GB of ram
GTX 970

OS windows7 64 bit professional

My monitor is a 144 hz monitor but it is only set at 59hz. Im using an hdmi cable so i cant get 144 hz but im planning on purchasing a display port cable( would a display port to hdmi cable allow me to get to 144 hz?).

games such as dying light, witcher 2

all drivers are up to date

im only getting 40 frames, with some small stuttering, on the lowest settings for witcher 2

40fps on high is good, 40fps on low definitely indicates a problem. Make sure you have plugged all the power connectors to your graphics card, that it's in the correct pci-e slot and that the screen is in fact plugged into the graphics card and not the...

First off make sure your Drivers are all setup. for your 970, just download Gforce experience as it will notify whenever there is a driver update for that. Also update/re install your mobo drivers and CPU. Then you could also check for a virus causing this problem (use malwarebytes). Hope one of these things helps you out.

At what resolution do you game and what fps are you getting in which games at what settings? This info will help us help you. I have 2 x gtx780 in sli. A 780 is very similar in performance to a 970. If I disable one of my cards I'm getting between 40 and 55fps in The Witcher 2 with everything including ubersampling maxed. How does this compare to you performance?

40fps on high is good, 40fps on low definitely indicates a problem. Make sure you have plugged all the power connectors to your graphics card, that it's in the correct pci-e slot and that the screen is in fact plugged into the graphics card and not the motherboard. I know it's simple but it always helps to eliminate the basics. Completely uninstall nvidia drivers and download the latest drivers from here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
I believe hdmi is a limitation. Best to go from display port to display port with second best being dvi to dvi (Someone correct me if I'm wrong). Try bench games other than The Witcher that we can compare. Here's what I've got thats worth benching. Crysis 2 and 3. Far Cry 3 and 4. GTA 5. GRID autosport. Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light. Sleeping Dogs. Battlefield 4. Dragon Age Inquisition.
What resolution is your screen?

I owe you dinner sir.... My hdmi cord was plugged into my mother board. I swapped out the hdmi cord for a dvi-d cord and now im running 144 hz on my monitor. My frames over doubled. On ultra settings for witcher 2 im sitting around 51-58 frames per sec depending whats going on on screen. Thank you buddy.
