Hello friends!
I have a Intel Core i5-3470 CPU, and wondered if I could overclock it to 3.8 or 4.0GHz?
Here's my system specs.

CPU: Intel Core i5-3470
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4
Video card: EVGA Geforce GTX 970
RAM: 8GB

I have the Cooler Master Seidon 120M liquid cooler as well, so heat is a minor issue.

Hey,
In some cases you can overclock the CPU slightly (if non-K) by adjusting the Base Clock but that usually only gives about 3% and affects PCIe devices like graphics cards as well so is not recommended in general.

If you feel like trying you can do that in the BIOS but you'd just go from 3.6GHz to 3.7GHz Turbo, or again 3% so I don't think it's worth messing with.

Other:
DX12 games should keep the i5-3470 doing quite well into the future. It will be interesting to see benchmarks on the first several games but i suggest for most we'll see the top CPU's, possibly down to an FX-4100 often being grouped together (bottleneck no longer at CPU). We'll just have to wait and see though.

Very few games would benefit from clocking the i5-3470 higher now either.

Download Intel tuning utility
Open and go to Manual Tuning. Disable Turbo mode and tweak the sliders on this numbers:
x40
x40
x39
x38
and apply!
Runs 4.1 ghz when full load in 2 cores and 3.8 - 3.9 ghz full load in all 4 cores. No need to change the volts, your mobo will take care of it, then leave all settings as it is. I got 50-55 temp on full load with my Hyper 212 Evo Cooling running prime95 for 30 minutes. It is very stable and I don't encounter any errors or whatsoever when playing heavy games and video rendering. I don't recommend messing with the Base clock for this type of cpu cause it makes changes to all frequency of your system and your rig might be unresponsive or unable to boot up.
