My TOSHIBA CANVIO 1TB is not being recognized in Windows 8.1 I get a message asking me to "FORMAT" the drive. That usually that wipes out all info, wo I refuse to format. When I connect to a Mac I can see all. What should I do (other than buying a Mac)?

Hi there mam3011,

As the drive works just fine when connected to a Mac, it may be a good idea to back up your data before proceeding.
What is the file format of the drive. You can check that when you go to Disk Management.
In case the file format is not NTFS, and you want to use the drive only on Windows, you can try converting the file format of the HDD to NTFS. Check this out: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/convert-hard-disk-partition-ntfs-format#1TC=windows-7
In case you want to use the drive on both Win and Mac, then I guess you can format it to FAT32(after you have backed up the data that is on it of course).

Hope this will help,
