I've got time warner cable and am paying for 15 mbps download.
When I run a speed test at speakeasy when my network is at a low draw, I usually get right around 15 mbps speeds and I can browse around the internet and stream video without issue.
The problem comes when I'm downloading a file at around 2 Mbps on one of the laptops- it drags the rest of my network to a snail's pace so much that I can't even open a webpage without it taking several minutes.
When I get all the lag I check my traffic monitor on the router and I can see the overall draw on the WAN - its usually right about 2 and a half Mbps out of an available 15 Mbps I'm assuming.
As far as my network map, I've got two phones connected at 2.4 GHz, one laptop at 5.0GHz, one laptop at 2.5 GHz, one tablet at 2.4 GHz, one desktop at 2.4 GHz and one wired desktop on a GB card, all on a ASUS Dark Knight router.
When I terminate the 2 Mbps download on the laptop, the network speeds right back up again and when I run a speed test, it shows about 15 Mbps. When I try to run the speed test while the laptop is downloading at about 2 Mbps, I have a hard time getting the speed page to load and when it does load, it shows about .2 Mbps speed. Although all the other aforementioned devices are still connected to the network, according to the traffic monitor there is no draw being consumed by those devices.
Am I looking at this wrong? If I have 15 Mbps available and the laptop is using 2 Mbps according to the traffic monitor, where is the rest of my 13 available Mbps going? Why am I lagging so bad?
