PCIE pins bent...help!

Hey guys, this may be hard to explain but I'll do my best.

Today I went to pull out my graphics card from the PCIE 3.0 x16 slot. I of course first undid the plastic latch thing that holds it in...so I thought. I pulled on it and it wouldn't come out. So I pulled harder and it still wouldn't. I was so convinced that I undid the latch so I pulled harder...bad idea.

I finally undid the latch properly and got the card out. I looked INSIDE the PCIE slot to see if there was any damage. To my horror I actually saw some pins sticking out into the slot. As in, if I look down the middle of the slot, there are two or three pins that are inward (towards the middle of the slot). It was dumb of me, but I put the card back in to try it out. I turned it on and it appears to work fine. I take the card out and guess what? Those pins that were bent inwards put small scratches on the graphics cards gold connectors.

I plugged it back in again and it worked again, and it appears to work fine...but I'm worried maybe that's just an illusion.

If the pins werent connecting properly, would the graphics card even work? Is it safe to keep using it like this, seeing as how i did see a few pins bent and there were scratches on the Graphics cards gold strips? Is any chance this could somehow fry my motherboard and the cpu?

I would include pics but I'm afraid to pull the card out again since it's working. Thank you.

There's no chance that you can fry other components with the bent pins in the slot but you can definitely fry the graphics card.

If one of the power pins contacts another, chance are it's going to do damage. Other bent pins won't have an obvious effect, like the ground ones. Of course, this puts the graphics card at risk from any voltage irregularities.

I wouldn't take the chance with that PCIe slot anymore.

Would there be any chance if a pin moved out of place by chance it could fry my other components? I'm going to have this thing in the car on a Three hour drive and I'm sure I'll go over some bumps.

So basically I need a new motherboard and graphics card? There is a very light surface scratch on a few of the gold strips (connectors) on the graphics card.

Would it hurt to try my current graphics card in a new motherboard? Could those scratches somehow damage the new motherboard?

UPDATE: I have a GTX 970 graphics card and a Z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard. The motherboard is pictured here:

I put the card in the SECOND PCIE slot that fits the graphics card. I guess this runs it in "X8" even though it is labeled as a PCIE x16 3.0 slot. Anyways, it appears to run all the games the same as before and I don't have to worry about pin issues.

Will this X8 configuration impede my graphics cards performance? I'm confused since even in my BIOS it calls this slot x16, but says it is running at X8.
